The results of this midterm election were truly unexpected, so it's surprising in that sense, haha.
While there were predictions that the Democrats would win, I thought there would be some variables, but I didn't expect the Republicans to collapse like this.
Not only did the House go to the Democrats, but they also took the Senate.
In areas where the Republicans were strong, like Texas, Kansas, and South Carolina, the Democrats won as well.
As of the morning of November 4th, the Democrats secured at least 54 seats in the Senate and surpassed a majority in the House.
At this point, it's not just a simple election loss; it should be seen as a warning to the entire Republican Party.
So, who would be the most surprised by these election results?
I've picked three individuals.
3rd Place: Greg Abbott, Governor of Texas
The news that a Republican governor lost to a Democratic candidate in Texas is quite shocking.
Greg Abbott has been serving as the governor of Texas since 2015 and has established himself as a prominent Republican politician.
He gained national recognition by clashing with the federal government over immigration policies and border issues.
However, he lost to Democratic candidate Beto O'Rourke in this election.
This marks the first time in 36 years that a Democrat has been elected governor in Texas.
Moreover, Texas is one of the most important political strongholds for the Republican Party.
For a sitting governor to lose in such a region signifies issues not just for him personally but also for the long-term electoral strategy of the Republican Party.
It must have been an incredibly hard-to-believe result for Abbott.
2nd Place: JD Vance, Vice President
I personally think that Vice President Vance is in quite a difficult situation.
Vance has been mentioned as a next-generation politician to lead the Republican Party after Trump.
He is also considered one of the leading Republican candidates for the 2028 presidential election.
However, if the Republicans suffer such a significant defeat in this election, the narrative changes.
Vance is a key figure in the current administration. If he claims to carry on the achievements of the Trump administration, he may also have to shoulder the discontent of voters revealed in this election.
Especially since the Democrats achieved a significant victory in Ohio, which is his political base, this must weigh heavily on him.
He will have to consider how much distance to keep from Trump or whether to maintain the same course until the end.
This presents quite a challenging dilemma for someone who dreams of being the next president.
1st Place: President Donald Trump
Of course, the top spot goes to President Trump.
If I had to name just one person who suffered the most significant political blow in this election, it would likely be Trump.
Trump actively supported Republican candidates leading up to this election.
However, the result was a simultaneous takeover of both the House and Senate by the Democrats.
The issue now is the next two years.
If the Democrats control Congress, it will be difficult for Trump to pass the legislation he desires.
There could also be conflicts over budget issues, and there may be more hearings investigating various policies and allegations against the administration.
The president's powers do not disappear overnight, but the political environment will be completely different from what it has been.
Moreover, analyses suggest that rising living costs and economic issues played a significant role in this election.
Trump has always touted the economy as his greatest political strength.
However, if voters turned their backs on the Republicans due to economic issues, it would be a politically painful outcome.
Of course, just because the Republicans lost this time does not guarantee that the Democrats will win every election in the future.
In American politics, the atmosphere can change dramatically in just two years.
However, at least for now, the Republicans are in a state of considerable shock.
Abbott has lost his political base, Vance must rethink his strategy for the next presidential election, and Trump will have to deal with a Congress controlled by the opposition for the remainder of his term.
It seems all three will face challenging times ahead.
Among them, the most interesting aspect will be Trump's response.
Will he compromise with Congress? Or will he confront them even more strongly?
