Having lived in LA, I've witnessed several U.S. presidential elections.
There were times when the Democrats won and times when the Republicans did.
No matter who becomes president, there are policies I like and some I find hard to understand.
However, looking at the exit poll results from this midterm election, I realize that we did not elect a king.
Reports indicate that 43% of voters expressed their opposition to President Trump when they voted in the midterm elections held on the 3rd.
In contrast, only 16% said they voted to support Trump.
43% to 16%.
Of course, this number does not represent the overall support rate among all Americans.
It reflects the motivations of those who actually participated in the voting.
Still, I think it's a significant number.
This suggests that many more people came out to express their opposition to the president than those who came out to support him.
I see this as an important function of American democracy.
No matter how much power the president holds, if the people are dissatisfied, they can check that power through elections.
President Trump is a politician who rallies his supporters with his strong rhetoric and confidence.
Many people appreciate that. There are certainly Americans who agree with his immigration and economic policies.
However, the problem is that those who do not support the president are also fellow Americans.
Winning a presidential election does not mean one can ignore the voices of those who did not support them.
The President of the United States is not a king.
They are an elected official who has been granted power by the people for a limited time.
No matter how powerful the president is, they must exercise their authority within the framework of the Constitution and laws, and be subject to checks from Congress and the courts.
This applies to both Democratic and Republican presidents.
Another interesting number from this exit poll is that voters identified the most important issues as the economy at 39% and democracy at 32%.
I found these two numbers quite intriguing.
It's natural that the economy is important. Living here in LA, many people are stressed about housing prices, rent, car insurance, and grocery costs.
These days, even grocery shopping is not as carefree as it used to be. Gas prices and dining out costs are also concerning.
However, just as many people consider the economy important, many also view democracy as a significant issue.
This suggests that while making a living is important, how the country is run is also crucial.
I believe one of the greatest strengths of America is that it is a society where one does not have to blindly obey the president.
There is the freedom to criticize the president, the freedom to oppose policies, and the freedom to choose someone else in the next election if one is dissatisfied.
That is the fundamental political system of this country.
Of course, the choices of those who support Trump should also be respected.
Democracy is a system that recognizes the voting rights of those who think differently from me.
We will have to wait and see what political changes this election brings for President Trump.
I'm also curious about how the Republican Party will interpret these results.
However, one thing I believe is clear.
The president is not above the people; rather, the people entrust power to the president.
Winning an election does not mean one can do whatever they want, nor can they govern by only listening to applause from their supporters.
American voters can send a clear message even in midterm elections if necessary.
Reflecting on the exit poll results, I had this thought.
Justice will prevail.
What those in power should be most wary of is not the opposing politician, but the moment the hearts of the people who entrusted them with power turn away.
