Having lived in Dallas for a long time, it's hard to believe that Texas is turning Democratic.
This has traditionally been a Republican stronghold. However, looking at the results of this midterm election, it seems that the political landscape in the U.S. is really shaking up.
Reports indicate that the Democrats have regained control of not only the House of Representatives but also the Senate.
According to the provided reports, the House secured 228 seats, and the Senate surpassed a majority with 54 seats.
It seems that the Democrats have won even in traditionally Republican strongholds like Texas and Kansas, indicating that this is more than just a simple electoral victory.
In particular, the news that the political map of South Texas has turned blue stands out.
Of course, there have always been areas in South Texas that strongly support the Democrats, and the support rates for both parties have fluctuated in each election.
However, if the foundation of the Republican Party is perceived to be shaken as it is now, it carries significant implications.
It's Going to Be Really Loud in Washington for the Next Two Years
The first thought that came to my mind when I saw the election results was this.
President Trump is going to have a tough time during the remainder of his term.
No matter how strong the powers of the U.S. president are, they cannot control Congress at will.
Especially when the opposition party controls both the Senate and the House, the situation changes completely.
From budget issues to major legislation, confirmations of high-ranking officials, and investigations into the administration, Congress has many means to check the president.
If the Democrats decide to investigate the policies and various controversies of the Trump administration, the White House will be overwhelmed with responses every day.
There will likely be hearings, and they may call administration officials to testify.
Considering Trump's strong personality, it's hard to imagine him quietly compromising with the Democrats during the remainder of his term.
We might see scenes of the White House and Congress clashing in the news every day.
What Will Happen to Trump?
This is the part I'm most curious about.
Trump has shown a tendency to fight back even harder when politically cornered.
However, this time the situation is different.
If voters handed over congressional power to the opposing party just two years after winning the presidential election, it should be taken as a serious political warning.
Of course, it's not uncommon for the ruling party to lose in midterm elections in U.S. politics. That doesn't mean the president immediately loses power.
However, it becomes more difficult to push new policies during the remainder of the term, and the likelihood of being bogged down by various political controversies increases.
There's also interest in whether the Democrats will bring up the issue of impeachment against the president.
However, impeachment and actual removal are entirely different matters. Even if the House passes articles of impeachment, two-thirds of the senators present must agree to remove the president.
Could He Declare Martial Law Like Former President Yoon Seok-yeol?
This thought crosses my mind.
You may remember that former President Yoon Seok-yeol declared a state of emergency in December 2024 in South Korea.
Watching the news at that time was truly unbelievable. The fact that a president in a democratic country would mobilize the military to resolve political conflicts was shocking.
There may be concerns that Trump could make extreme choices if he finds himself politically cornered.
However, the U.S. system is different from that of South Korea.
The U.S. president does not have the general authority to declare a nationwide state of emergency or overturn election results due to political defeat or opposition from Congress. The domestic use of military forces is also subject to legal and constitutional restrictions.
Therefore, there is no basis to expect that Trump would make the same choice as former President Yoon Seok-yeol.
Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see how Trump responds when political pressure increases.
Things Are Going to Get More Interesting from Here
It doesn't seem like American politics will be quiet for the next two years.
The Democrats will use their congressional power to check the Trump administration, and Trump is likely to rally his supporting voters to fight back.
The problem is that in the process, policies necessary for the public may be pushed aside.
I believe that regardless of whether it's the Republicans or Democrats who win, what's more important is that the U.S. economy stabilizes and people can live a little more comfortably.
However, if the results of this election are indeed true, it seems that it will be recorded as a significant event in American political history.
After all, even Texas, known as the heart of the Republican Party, has been shaken.
I never expected to witness such political changes while living in Dallas.
President Trump's remaining two years.
Will he govern by compromising with Congress, or will he continue to clash politically? I'm curious to see what happens.
Either way, the next two years are definitely going to be loud.
