As I get older, I've been thinking about how suitable Centerville is for living in my later years.
First of all, it's a very convenient place to live. There are plenty of grocery stores, restaurants, and hospitals or pharmacies nearby. There are also many religious facilities like churches in the area.
As long as I can still drive, I don't find it inconvenient at all. If I need something, I can usually take a short drive of 10 to 15 minutes to get what I need.
When you get older, the most important thing is healthcare. When you're younger, it doesn't matter if the hospital is a bit far away, but that changes as you age.
In Centerville, there are hospitals like Inova Fair Oaks Hospital and StoneSprings Hospital Center, and there are also several general practices and specialist clinics nearby.
Just having a large hospital close by gives older people a sense of relief.
There are also several communities where seniors can live.
From places for those who can still live independently to assisted living facilities that help with meals, cleaning, and transportation, there are many options available.
However, the issue is definitely money. If you think senior facilities will be cheap, you're in for a surprise. It's common to find places that cost over $3,000 a month, and as the need for services increases, so do the costs. Couples moving in together will need to crunch the numbers a few times.
Centerville itself isn't exactly a cheap place to live either. Just because you're retired doesn't mean your living expenses suddenly drop in half; property taxes, insurance, car maintenance, and grocery bills keep coming.
And in my opinion, the biggest concern about aging in Centerville is transportation.
Right now, I can just take my car wherever I need to go. But when I reach my late 70s or 80s and have to stop driving, things will change.
Since it's not like New York, where you can just hop on the subway right outside your door, getting to the hospital might require someone to drive you.
So if you're thinking about continuing to live in Centerville after retirement, it's a good idea to not only prepare financially but also think ahead about how you'll manage if you can no longer drive.
Still, I don't think Centerville is a bad place to live as you age.
It's quiet, with necessary facilities nearby, hospitals available, and if you've lived there long enough, you likely have friends or church connections.
They say that as you get older, a familiar neighborhood is more comfortable than a new one.
When I was younger, having a nice house was important, but now that I'm older, I'm starting to understand that having a nearby hospital and someone to call for help is more important.
