There's a Reason Moms Talk About School Districts
Living in Centreville, when the topic of schools comes up, moms can talk for hours. At first, I thought, "How different can they be if they're all in Fairfax County public schools?"
But listening to families with kids, I realized it's not that simple.
Even within FCPS, just a difference in address can lead to different high schools, and each school has a slightly different academic atmosphere.
The three schools that come up most often around Centreville are Chantilly High School, Centreville High School, and Westfield High School.
Among them, many moms have a positive view of Chantilly when it comes to academics. It seems to have consistently received good evaluations in areas like test scores and college preparation.
Because of this, some families even check, "Is this address zoned for Chantilly High?" when looking for a home.
However, it's often said that this also depends on the child's personality.
While an environment with many high-achieving students can be motivating, it might actually be stressful for a child who dislikes competition.

I've also heard a lot of good things about Centreville High School. Although it's named Centreville, its address is actually in Clifton, which can be a bit confusing at first.
The student population is quite large, and the graduation rates and reading proficiency scores are consistently good.
Westfield High School is also quite large, with over 2,000 students, giving it that big high school feel you see in American dramas. It offers a variety of sports and clubs, so families who want their kids to explore different activities tend to be very interested.
Interestingly, when moms discuss schools, they often reach similar conclusions.
When asked, "Which school is the best?" they initially talk about rankings and test scores.
But after a while, the conversation usually ends with, "What matters is what's right for our child."
I think that's true. A child who is academically driven might thrive in a competitive school, while a child who enjoys sports, music, or club activities might need to consider the school's size and programs more closely.
And there's something very important to be cautious about when looking for a home in Centreville.
Just because a listing says Centreville doesn't mean it's zoned for Centreville High School.
Sometimes, crossing a street can change the school zone, so you can't rely solely on real estate ads.
If you find a home you like, the best way to confirm school zoning is to enter the address directly into the FCPS website before signing a contract.
I now understand that moving to Centreville isn't just about finding a house.
For families with kids, it's essential to check the school address before even looking at the kitchen.
