The first hospital you should know about in Monterey is CHOMP. Its official name is Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, but locals often just call it "CHOMP." The address is 23625 W R Holman Highway, and it takes about 10 minutes by car from downtown Monterey. The emergency room operates 24 hours a day.

CHOMP is the main hospital in the Montage Health regional healthcare network. You can think of it as the representative general hospital for the Monterey Peninsula. It has over 250 beds and provides medical services in various fields, including internal medicine, surgery, emergency medicine, orthopedics, cancer treatment, cardiology, and rehabilitation.

At first, I wondered if there would be a proper large hospital in Monterey since it's a small tourist town with a low population. However, after looking into CHOMP, I found that the healthcare infrastructure is surprisingly well-developed. Especially since many retirees live in Monterey, Carmel, and Pacific Grove, medical services that are important for middle-aged and older adults, like cardiac care, cancer treatment, and rehabilitation, are quite significant.

However, you shouldn't think of CHOMP as a large Level I Trauma Center. In cases of very serious trauma, patients may be transferred to designated trauma centers like Natividad in Salinas or other higher-level medical facilities, depending on their condition and the level of care needed. So, it's good to understand that a general emergency room and a trauma center are somewhat different concepts.

There are primary care clinics and specialist facilities nearby, so you can usually see your primary care doctor and get referred to a specialist if needed.
