Living in Tacoma means it's not as hectic as Seattle, but it's not completely rural either.
There are ports and many old neighborhoods, and just a short drive away, you can find large shopping centers.
However, when I recently looked into the hospitals in the Tacoma area, I found that the medical facilities are quite well-equipped.
Those who have lived in the U.S. for a long time know that not all hospitals are the same, even if they are nearby.
Some may have an emergency room but can't perform major surgeries, and sometimes you have to go to another city due to a lack of specialists.
Especially as you get older, knowing what hospitals are near your home becomes increasingly important.
One of the prominent large hospitals in Tacoma is MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital. It's a large general hospital with 437 beds, and its emergency room operates 24 hours a day.
The reason this hospital caught my attention is not just because of its size.
It is designated as a Level II Trauma Center and has received specialized certification in stroke treatment.
This means it can provide professional emergency care for serious injuries from traffic accidents or sudden stroke symptoms.
In 2025, it also received the American Heart Association's Get With The Guidelines Gold Plus Award.
Of course, just because it has received an award doesn't guarantee that every patient will have a good outcome. Still, such evaluations and certifications are useful references when looking into hospitals.
Especially in the fields of maternity and neonatal care, it's a large hospital, making it an important medical facility for families with young children.

There is another large hospital in Tacoma called St. Joseph Medical Center.
It is part of Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, and some may be more familiar with its former name, CHI Franciscan.
Interestingly, this hospital collaborates with Tacoma General in the field of trauma emergency care.
Through a system called Tacoma Trauma Trust, they share the care of severe trauma patients.
Initially, I thought the two hospitals would be in competition, but there are aspects where they cooperate.
From a patient's perspective, having two hospitals responsible for severe trauma care in the area is reassuring.
However, emergency patients are transported to appropriate facilities based on their condition and the hospital's operational situation, so choosing the nearest hospital isn't always the right answer.
U.S. health insurance is really complicated. No matter how good a hospital is, if your insurance doesn't cover it, the costs can be significant.
Kaiser Permanente also provides medical services in Tacoma, so the choice of hospitals and medical staff varies depending on your insurance.
When I look for a hospital, the first thing I check is the insurance network.
The out-of-pocket costs can vary depending on where you get the same test.
Especially for specialist consultations, you also need to check the waiting period for appointments.
When choosing a hospital in the U.S., it's good to consider not only the size of the facility but also insurance coverage and appointment availability.
When I was younger, I used to think about shopping malls, restaurants, and commuting distances when choosing a place to live.
But these days, my thoughts have changed a bit. I pay attention to how long it takes to get to the emergency room, where to go for specialist care, and which hospital to use if my parents get sick.
Especially in the U.S., health insurance and hospital accessibility greatly affect quality of life.
In that regard, I think Tacoma is a city where large medical institutions are well-established relative to its size.
