Last weekend, my neighbor showed me her Tesla Model Y charging receipt after a trip to Dallas.

She made a round trip of 240 miles, and the electricity cost for charging at home was less than $15.

When I drive the same distance in my SUV, the gas alone costs nearly $60, and adding the price of a coffee at a rest stop increases the total significantly.

I was curious if this difference was real, so I dug into the numbers.

To sum it up, the average electricity rate in Houston is around 15 cents per kilowatt-hour, while the average gasoline price in Texas is $3.69 per gallon.

When converted to cost per mile, charging an electric vehicle at home costs about 5 to 6 cents per mile, while a regular gasoline vehicle costs about 12 to 15 cents per mile.

From the numbers alone, it seems like a savings of two to three times.

The American Automobile Association (AAA) also shows similar trends in their annual driving cost reports.

In their 2025 survey, the fuel cost for gasoline vehicles was 13 cents per mile, and the electricity rate rose to 16.7 cents per kilowatt-hour, yet the fuel cost for electric vehicles was still less than half that of gasoline vehicles.

If we assume driving 13,500 miles a year, charging an electric vehicle at home costs about $700 annually, while filling up with gas for the same distance costs about $2,154.

That's a difference of over $1,400 a year, which is enough for a family trip within the country.

However, there's an important point to consider.

If you frequently use fast charging stations outside, the situation changes dramatically.

Public fast charging often exceeds 50 cents per kilowatt-hour, making it two to three times more expensive than home charging, which could significantly reduce the savings compared to gas prices.

So, the true appeal of electric vehicles is not in charging quickly outside but in consistently charging at home every night.

In Texas, you can choose your electricity provider, so switching to a plan with lower nighttime rates can further reduce charging costs.

I personally don't mind comparing these rates and find that a little effort can lead to significant savings over a year.

Charging an electric vehicle is convenient since it can be automatically paid through an app with just one card, eliminating the wait at gas stations.

Additionally, according to a recent AAA report on total new car ownership costs, electric vehicles can sometimes have higher overall ownership costs due to insurance and depreciation.

While fuel costs alone show that electric vehicles are definitely advantageous, it's good to keep in mind that the overall picture, including car prices and insurance, is a bit more complex.

However, the fact that you don't have to worry about oil changes or engine maintenance means one less expense quietly disappearing from your monthly budget, which is quite noticeable.

Personally, I believe that if you have a short daily commute and the ability to charge at home, an electric vehicle can definitely be beneficial for your finances.

On the other hand, if you frequently travel long distances and need to rely on public charging stations, it may not be fair to conclude that electric vehicles are always the better option.

If you're only replacing one of two cars, switching the one used for short daily commutes to an electric vehicle is the most financially sound decision.

It feels great to charge at home without worrying about fluctuating gas prices, knowing your bank account is getting healthier.

Ultimately, regardless of which car you choose, calculating the numbers yourself and making the choice that suits you is the true beginning of a prosperous life.

Whichever option you choose, the money saved means one more place to travel, so I hope we all find luck in our wallets today.
