At first glance, it may seem like an isolated city in the middle of the desert, but in reality, it offers a surprisingly diverse range of transportation options connecting it to other cities, including not only flights but also romantic cross-country trains and intercity buses.

The most representative mode of transportation is undoubtedly Tucson International Airport (Tucson International Airport, TUS). Located about 10 miles (approximately 16 km) south of downtown, this airport is medium-sized but boasts a solid selection of direct flights connecting to major hub cities across the United States.

Major U.S. airlines such as American Airlines, Southwest, United, and Delta all operate flights here, with direct routes to large cities like Los Angeles (LA), Dallas, Phoenix, San Francisco, Chicago, Denver, and Seattle.

Compared to the massive Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport nearby, its smaller size means that check-in and security procedures are noticeably quicker, and parking costs are much more affordable, which is a hidden advantage. In particular, there are frequent direct flights connecting to the neighboring city of Phoenix, making it very convenient for transfers to destinations worldwide. Major rental car companies are also located within the airport, making it easy to rent or return vehicles.

If you're dreaming of a road trip, Tucson Amtrak Station is a great alternative. This quaint and historic station, located in the downtown area (400 E. Toole Ave.), is served by Amtrak's legendary route, the Sunset Limited.

This route is a cross-country train connecting Los Angeles in the west to New Orleans in the south, operating three times a week. The journey takes about 8 hours to LA and approximately 47 hours to New Orleans.

While it is slower than flying, the long-distance train journey allows you to enjoy the majestic western desert and horizon, providing a unique nostalgic experience. However, keep in mind that it only operates three times a week, and delays are common due to yielding to large freight trains, so plan accordingly.

If you want to travel lightly to Phoenix, public transportation or a car is the most realistic choice. Using intercity buses like FlixBus or Greyhound, you can travel from Tucson to Phoenix in about 1.5 to 2 hours. If you use your own car or a rental, taking Interstate 10 directly will get you to downtown Phoenix in about 1 hour and 45 minutes, making the road conditions intuitive and convenient.

For short-distance travel within the city or between the airport, rideshare services like Uber and Lyft are fully operational. They are primarily used by travelers with a lot of luggage moving from the airport to downtown, with fares typically ranging from about $20 to $35 depending on the time of day.

Regular taxis are also available, but rideshare services are much more popular due to their price transparency and convenience. New residents settling in Tucson or travelers planning a visit are advised to save the latest flight routes from TUS airport and Amtrak schedules on their smartphones to flexibly strategize their travel plans.
