Two Golf Courses in Cheyenne: A Look at Green Fees and Courses - Cheyenne - 1

The reason I started golfing is a bit funny. Ever since I felt my bald spot, I strangely became drawn to golf.

Wearing a hat and heading out to the course, I find that I can't think of anything else that day.

It might seem odd to play golf in this frontier city where the Great Plains meet the Rocky Mountains, but surprisingly, it fits well.

Cheyenne has two public golf courses, and with reasonable prices and decent courses, it's actually a pretty good place to play golf.

First, let's look at the Airport Golf Club. As the name suggests, it's near the airport and has been open since 1929, so it has quite a history.

It's surprising that it has maintained the same location for almost a century.

The course is 6,121 yards long, par 70, with a course rating of 67.1 and a slope rating of 99. The green fee is the same whether it's a weekday or weekend: $22 for 18 holes and $15 for 9 holes.

For this price and this quality of course, it's honestly a great deal. Compared to other public courses in different cities, it holds its own in terms of value.

It's also the most popular course in Cheyenne and holds the title of being the only course where the Wyoming Open is held.

As a venue for weekly professional tournaments, the maintenance is definitely on another level.

Each hole has a different design, so there's no chance of getting bored, and both beginners and seasoned players will find satisfaction.

In the summer, the long days allow for a round of golf even after work, which I really appreciate.

The second course is the Kingham Prairie View Golf Course. Opened in 1965, it's a 9-hole course measuring 3,080 yards, par 36.

It has a course rating of 34.4 and a slope rating of 109, located at 3601 Windmill Rd. While smaller than the Airport Golf Club, it's perfect for beginners or those looking for a casual round.

There's also a junior lesson program, making it a great option for families wanting to learn golf together. It's a walkable course, so many people play without a cart.

Both courses are public courses operated by the City of Cheyenne.

Since they are managed under the same system, you can conveniently book tee times for both courses on the same website, airportgolfclub.com.

I also like that anyone can play without a membership. The way they've bundled the two courses under one golf brand is quite clever.

There's one more unique feature about golf in Cheyenne: the altitude. At 6,062 feet, or about 1,847 meters, the air is thin, allowing the ball to travel much farther than expected.

First-time players often get confused with distance calculations. There's a tip to use one club lower than usual, and it actually helps quite a bit.

The wind can be strong, causing driver shots to go off course sometimes, but

that's part of the fun of Wyoming golf. Playing under the vast sky gives a sense of scale.

The Airport Golf Club has been operating for over 95 years since its opening in 1929.

Thinking about how many Wyoming golfers have honed their swings on this course over the years is quite moving.

Kingham Prairie View has also been loved by locals for decades since its opening in 1965. Both courses are a page in the history of Wyoming golf.

After a round under the Wyoming sky, it feels like my mind gets reset.

At $22 for 18 holes, I think it's definitely a fair price for such a scenic experience.

While my bald spot keeps getting bigger, my score is gradually improving, so I convince myself it's a win.

Once you go out, you'll understand why golf in this town is so good.
