Fullerton has fewer than 10 homicides each year, which is about average or slightly below the national average when considering its population.
In fact, even within Southern California, Orange County is often rated as much safer than LA County, and Fullerton is a city that reflects this influence. Most homicides are often related to domestic violence or drug-related incidents, so the likelihood of an ordinary Korean resident becoming a victim of random crime is very low.
Rather, the more pressing concern in Fullerton is vehicle-related crime. Vehicle theft and break-ins occur regularly. Older Hyundai, Kia, and Honda vehicles are often targeted by thieves. This is partly due to the lingering effects of the 'Kia Boys' theft methods that were popular in the U.S. for a while. It is advisable not to leave bags, laptops, or shopping bags in the car, and using a steering wheel lock can also be helpful.
Property crime is also a common type of crime in Fullerton. Incidents of 'smash-and-grab' thefts, where thieves break car windows in shopping mall or downtown parking lots to steal items, occur frequently. Retail theft and residential burglary are also consistently reported. The southern areas and downtown tend to have slightly more incidents, while the northern residential areas are generally quieter. Nowadays, many homes are installing doorbell cameras like Ring, which are known to have a significant crime prevention effect.
Recent trends show a slight increase in violent crime, while property crime has been decreasing compared to the past. However, California has long been criticized for its lenient penalties for theft crimes, so vehicle theft and retail theft remain significant concerns for residents.
One thing I want to emphasize is that among immigrants, there are surprisingly many who are hesitant to report to the police. However, if you are a victim of a crime, you can report it regardless of your immigration status and are legally protected. It is better to report to the police rather than trying to handle it alone.
In my opinion, Fullerton is relatively comfortable to live in Southern California. However, that doesn't mean you can be complacent and think, "This place is definitely safe." It is crucial to lock your car doors, not leave valuables in the car, and avoid deserted areas at night, as these basic habits are really important. Ultimately, there isn't a city that is inherently safe; rather, it seems that people who have safe living habits live more safely.
