One advantage of Cedar Hill State Park is that it's not just a place to pitch a tent. You can enjoy hiking and biking while camping, and fishing or water activities are available at Joe Pool Lake. As a Texas state park, it has basic facilities, making it convenient for beginner campers.

The costs are generally lower compared to hotel stays. Basic tent camping sites around DFW can usually be found for around a few dozen dollars per night. However, RV sites with electricity and water, premium sites right by the lake, or cabins can be significantly more expensive. Some state parks may also charge an entrance fee in addition to the camping site cost, so it's good to check when making reservations.

I believe one of the advantages of camping from Irving is the distance. You can work until Friday and leave Saturday morning. Instead of driving for hours on the highway, you can be sitting by the lake in just 30 to 40 minutes.

You can start by enjoying paddleboarding at Lake Carolyn and gradually expand your outdoor activities to include more distant lake camping on weekends.

If you're new to camping, you don't need to buy a lot of gear right away. It's easier to start at campgrounds with basic amenities like restrooms, showers, and electricity.

From the center of Irving, it may seem like all you see are highways and office buildings, but just a short drive away, the atmosphere changes. You can enjoy city life while being able to pitch a tent and sleep by the lake on weekends, which is one of the unexpected joys of living in Irving.
