I've been working in Irving for quite a while now, but honestly, I'm still not used to the traffic issues.
At least after figuring out the road structure, it has been less congested, but at first, I was confused about where to go with I-35E, I-635, SH 183, and SH 114 all tangled up.
The key to Irving's traffic infrastructure is these four highways. I-35E runs through the east side of Irving, connecting Dallas and Fort Worth north and south, while I-635 is used for east-west travel. SH 183 is the main road connecting DFW Airport and downtown Irving, and SH 114 is the route that passes through Las Colinas.
There are over a million vehicles using the roads in Irving each day. It's hard to avoid congestion during rush hours, especially at the intersection of SH 183 and I-35E, which gets severely congested between 7 AM and 9 AM, and 4 PM and 7 PM. Currently, there is also a reconstruction project underway at the Irving Interchange, aimed at improving the intersection of SH 183, SH 114, Loop 12, and Spur 482. Loop 12 will be expanded from 6 lanes to 8 lanes over a 1.2-mile stretch.
Public transportation is also available. The DART Orange Line connects DFW Airport to the Dallas Parker Road station, passing through Irving. The Trinity Railway Express, known as TRE, is a commuter train that connects downtown Dallas and downtown Fort Worth, with a station in Irving as well.
The TRE operates from Monday to Saturday and does not run on Sundays. DART buses cover several routes within Irving. Additionally, there is a gondola system in the Las Colinas Urban Center that serves as a water taxi, providing a unique experience for both tourists and commuters.
Basically, you need a car to live comfortably in Irving. While public transportation exists, its schedule and coverage limitations make it inconvenient to get around Irving without a car. It's a practical tip for living in Irving to familiarize yourself with your commuting routes and have an alternative route in mind.
