Honestly, when I looked into the crime statistics for Irving, I was a bit taken aback. I always thought of Irving as a decent place to live, with Las Colinas, many companies, and close proximity to DFW Airport. However, crime shouldn't just be viewed through a single number. When I broke it down by category, there were definitely areas to be cautious about.
In 2024, there were 19 reported murders in Irving, which is an increase of 5 from the previous year. While it's important to consider that the city has a population of over 250,000, the fact that the number of murders has increased from the previous year is certainly eye-catching.
However, the overall crime trend tells a different story. During the same period, violent crime decreased by 9.2% compared to the previous year, and property crime also dropped by about 10%. So, while the number of murders has risen, other major crimes have decreased. Therefore, it's difficult to conclude that "Irving has suddenly become dangerous" based on just one type of crime.
What I was more interested in was vehicle theft.
In Irving, the likelihood of becoming a victim of vehicle theft is estimated to be about 1 in 235. Living in the U.S., a car is almost like an extension of your legs, and if it gets stolen, it's not just about the money; your whole day-to-day life gets disrupted. You have to commute, call the insurance company, file a police report, and even look for a rental car.
Especially for those who use outdoor parking lots at apartments or leave their cars parked late at night, it's important to be extra cautious. It's basic to not leave laptops or bags visible in the car, and if possible, using a garage or a secured parking lot can provide peace of mind. Considering using a tracking device is also worth thinking about.
The overall property crime rate is about 22 incidents per 1,000 residents. This number suggests that multiple property crimes occur throughout the city every day. Of course, since this is the total for a city with over 250,000 people, it doesn't mean that crimes happen daily in my neighborhood.
In fact, looking at the overall figures, there are some reassuring aspects. The total crime rate in Irving for 2024 has decreased by about 4% compared to the previous year, with approximately 2,475 incidents per 100,000 residents, which is lower than the national average of about 2,752 incidents.
Ultimately, there's no need to label Irving as a dangerous city, nor is there a reason to think it's completely safe. Like most American cities, the perceived safety can vary by neighborhood and time of day.
If I lived in Irving, I don't think I would be particularly scared. However, I would still maintain basic habits like locking my car, not leaving items inside, and avoiding isolated areas late at night. While the overall crime decrease is a good sign, vehicle theft is definitely something to be mindful of in Irving.
