These days, with prices constantly rising, I find myself searching for even a dollar off when I go to the grocery store, and I try to use gas stations that are a bit cheaper.
While I save a dollar or two here and there, sometimes it feels utterly pointless.
If something unexpected happens, all the money I've saved can disappear in an instant.
A few days ago, I dropped someone off at LAX and was on my way home.
Airport rides are tricky, right? It's hard to say no when asked, but it feels awkward to ask for money in return.
It takes gas and time, but since I owe them a favor, I do it with good intentions.
That day, I dropped them off at LAX and got back on the 105, heading north on the 110 freeway.
There was a lot of traffic, and as I was driving along with the flow, I changed lanes, but it happened to be in a section with a long white solid line.
I definitely signaled and checked that there were no cars in the adjacent lane. But shortly after, I noticed a police car tailing me, and I thought, surely it can't be because of me, but it was.
When I pulled over, the officer approached and said I changed lanes in a no-change zone marked by a solid white line... and I ended up getting a ticket.
Of course, if I didn't follow the traffic laws, it's my fault.
However, since there was no accident, I didn't cut anyone off dangerously, and I signaled, it felt pretty bitter to receive a ticket.
When I got home, I looked it up online.
In California, a single solid white line and a double solid white line have different meanings.
In particular, a double solid white line prohibits lane changes.
On the other hand, a regular single solid white line does not necessarily prohibit all lane changes by itself.
So, I figured I should check what law was cited on the ticket.
What worries me more than the $250 ticket fine is the points.
If I get a point for the traffic violation, it could affect my car insurance rates.
In California, if you complete traffic school once every 18 months, you can keep that violation record from being disclosed to regular insurance companies.
The problem is that it also takes a significant amount of time and money.
Paying the ticket fine, the traffic school fee, and possibly seeing my insurance rates go up, I have no idea how much it will all cost.
Think about it. You feel good about saving $5 by not buying a cup of coffee. You feel proud of saving $10 by buying meat on sale at the grocery store.
But if your car breaks down, it could cost $1,000, a trip to the dentist could be several hundred dollars, and like this time, just one traffic ticket could easily cost over $400.
All the money I saved over months can vanish in just one day.
In moments like this, I really wonder what the point of saving is.
Of course, if I hadn't saved, things would be even tougher.
I know that in my head. But emotionally, it's hard to accept.
Especially in LA, where it's difficult to live without a car, the costs of maintaining a vehicle are significant. Insurance, registration fees, gas, maintenance, and unexpected fines.
When I was younger, I thought I would have a bit more financial freedom as I got older.
But the reality is still searching for $2 off items at the grocery store and worrying about $300 tickets when I get home.
At least I'm thankful that I didn't get into an accident.
It's much better than someone getting hurt or a car getting damaged.
Still, honestly, it stings.
It's frustrating to have this happen on the way back after doing a good deed by giving someone a ride to the airport.
Now I think it's just as important to prepare for unexpected expenses as it is to save money.
But today, I'm just not feeling great about it.
