While living in Riverside, I had this thought one day. I can easily recall where the good restaurants and Costco are, but I realized I didn't know which hospital to go to if I suddenly got sick. People generally don't think about hospitals on a daily basis.

But when an emergency arises, who has the presence of mind to search for a hospital on their smartphone? So, I started to look into the medical facilities in Riverside one by one.

First, there's Riverside Community Hospital. It's located downtown and is one of the major hospitals representing the Riverside area. What's particularly important is that it is a Level I Trauma Center. This means it has a high-level trauma system capable of treating life-threatening patients, such as those involved in car accidents or severe injuries.

Not only does it have an emergency room, but it also offers various specialties, including cardiology, neurology, cancer treatment, and women's health, making it a good option for comprehensive care when needed. If you plan to live in Riverside for a long time, it's a good idea to at least remember its location.

The second one is Kaiser Permanente Riverside Medical Center. Those who have lived in California for a long time are likely familiar with Kaiser. It connects everything from insurance to hospitals, primary care doctors, specialists, and pharmacies within one system, making it quite convenient for those who get used to it.

This is especially beneficial for those with chronic conditions like diabetes or hypertension that require long-term management, as you can manage your test and medical records within the same system. When you visit a primary care doctor and then a specialist, your records are linked, reducing the need for patients to explain everything from the beginning each time.

However, Kaiser is not a hospital where you receive treatment under the same conditions. You need to check whether your health insurance allows you to use the Kaiser system.

When choosing insurance at work, it's important not just to look at the hospital names but also to check if the doctors and specialties you frequently use are within the network.

Another place to note is the hospital formerly known as Parkview Community Hospital. It is now operated under the name Doctors Hospital of Riverside, part of the AHMC group. For those living in the western part of Riverside, this location may be more convenient. It's important to consider how quickly you can get to a hospital rather than just looking for the biggest one.

The biggest realization I had while researching hospitals is that insurance is crucial. In the U.S., having a good hospital nearby isn't enough. You need to know which hospitals are in-network for your insurance, what the emergency room costs are, and how primary care and specialist visits are connected.

Especially for those who are new to the U.S. from Korea, the hospital system can feel really complicated. It can be confusing at first to know when to go to the emergency room, urgent care, or a primary care doctor.

So, I recommend saving the locations of the nearest emergency room and urgent care on your phone. It may not seem necessary on a daily basis, but when you do need it, that information becomes really important. Riverside is not a city lacking in medical facilities. The problem is that many people don't know where to go.

It's best to know about hospitals when you're healthy. If you wait until you're sick to figure it out, it's too late and you'll be in a panic. Ultimately, deciding on a hospital that fits your insurance and location ahead of time is one of the essential pieces of information to have while living in the U.S.
