After moving to Riverside and getting a new number, I saw 951 and thought, "What is this?"
When you first move here, everyone gets confused about this at least once.
Originally, this area used to have just 909 for everything. But as more people moved in and the population grew, there weren't enough numbers.
So they created 951 as a separate area code. To put it simply, you can think of it as a Riverside County exclusive number.
Not only Riverside City but also Temecula, Moreno Valley, Corona, Hemet, and Palm Springs all use 951.
So just by looking at the number, you can tell, "Oh, this person is from Riverside."
So what about 909? That's for the neighboring San Bernardino County.
Ontario, Fontana, Rancho Cucamonga, and Redlands all fall under 909.
So if you dial 909 to call someone in Riverside, it won't connect. Riverside numbers always start with 951.
And if you go further east, you reach the desert area.
That's 760. Places like Palm Desert, Coachella, and Indio fall under this code.
To summarize, think of it as Riverside 951, next to it 909, and further east the desert 760.
It's good to know a few important numbers while living here. In emergencies, there's 911, which is universal, so no need to worry about that.
For police in non-emergency situations, like noise complaints or accident follow-ups, you can use Riverside's non-emergency police number (951) 826-5700.
If you use public transportation, there's RTA, and their number is (951) 565-5002. Also, 211 and 311 can be really confusing; 211 is for life assistance.
It connects you to resources for food, housing, unemployment, and so on. 311 is for city services, like reporting broken streetlights, potholes, or garbage issues. Don't confuse this with 911.
These days, AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile all have good coverage, so communication worries are almost nonexistent.
However, for local businesses, having a 951 number definitely gives a local feel and increases trustworthiness.
One more thing. In this area, calls often come from mixed numbers of 951, 909, and 760.
So just by looking at the number, you can get a rough idea of where it's coming from.
For example, if you're looking for a restaurant in Riverside and see a 909 number, it's likely from the San Bernardino area. If it's 760, it's almost certainly from the desert.
There are a lot of spam calls these days. Knowing this helps you judge when an unknown number calls, "Oh, this is probably from this area."
Finally, most public institutions, schools, and hospitals in Riverside County use 951.
So if you see 951, you can just think, "Oh, that's from my neighborhood," and feel at ease.
