Bourbon Tastes Better at Home: Top 3 Value Bourbons Under $30 - San Francisco - 1

Living in San Francisco, there are plenty of places to drink.

Every neighborhood has nice bars, there are many cocktail spots, and some places have dozens of whiskey varieties.

However, lately, I've strangely preferred enjoying a glass of bourbon at home over going out to bars.

In the past, when I thought of whiskey, I immediately thought of Scotch. Names like Johnnie Walker and Macallan were familiar to me.

But a few months ago, I became interested in bourbon.

At first, I thought all American whiskey was pretty much the same, but after trying it, I found that there are more varieties and flavors than I expected.

What I particularly like is the price.

If I go to a decent bar in San Francisco and have two or three glasses of whiskey, it easily exceeds $50, including tips.

However, for $20 to $30, I can buy a decent bottle of bourbon that lasts me several days at home.

Of course, there are many expensive bourbons. But I'm not yet considering drinking anything over $100 a bottle.

So, I've been trying three bourbons that are highly rated for their value among American whiskey enthusiasts.

Wild Turkey 101

Price: about $21–$25
Alcohol content: 50.5%

This is the bourbon that suits my taste the best among the three.

Honestly, I was a bit surprised when I first tried it.

With an alcohol content of 50.5%, it has quite a strong kick when it goes down. It definitely differs from the typical 40% whiskeys.

However, after taking a sip and waiting a bit, sweet notes of vanilla and caramel come through. There's also a hint of spiciness reminiscent of pepper and a scent that evokes orange peel.

I usually drink it with one ice cube.

When friends come over, I pull out Wild Turkey 101, and whiskey-loving friends generally respond positively.

Mixing it with cola or soda doesn't easily mask the unique bourbon flavor, which is a plus.

Personally, I find it amazing that it delivers this level of flavor for around $25.

Evan Williams Bottled-in-Bond

Price: about $18–$22
Alcohol content: 50%

This product is commonly referred to as the white label. At first, I didn't have high expectations because the price was so low.

However, when I actually tried it, I found it to be much better than expected. It has a sweetness reminiscent of brown sugar, with roasted nuts and oak notes, finishing with a slight peppery scent.

Notably, this product has the Bottled-in-Bond designation.

This means that according to U.S. legal standards, the whiskey was produced at a single distillery during a single distilling season, aged for at least four years, and bottled at 100 proof, or 50% alcohol content.

This doesn't necessarily mean it's a premium whiskey, but at least it meets certain production standards, which gives me confidence.

I often choose this bourbon when I'm casually having a drink with friends rather than drinking alone.

It's good with ice, and it's also great for making an Old Fashioned cocktail with sugar and bitters.

If it tastes this good for around $20, I feel there's no reason to insist on more expensive options.

Buffalo Trace

Price: about $26–$30
Alcohol content: 45%

The third is Buffalo Trace.

While the first two products are a bit strong and heavy, this one is relatively smooth and sweet.

It starts with notes of caramel and toffee, followed by subtle fruit and oak aromas.

If I had to recommend one of the three to a friend trying whiskey for the first time, I would choose Buffalo Trace.

With an alcohol content of 45%, it's relatively easy to drink, and the flavor is well-balanced.

However, the price of Buffalo Trace can vary depending on the region and store.

Name Price Range Proof Main Flavors and Aromas Recommended For
Wild Turkey 101 $21–$25 50.5% Caramel, spicy notes, orange peel For those who enjoy bold and intense traditional bourbons
Evan Williams BiB $18–$22 50.0% Brown sugar, oak, nuts, pepper For those seeking a rich flavor at an affordable price
Buffalo Trace $26–$30 45.0% Toffee, vanilla, subtle fruit notes For those who prefer a relatively smooth and sweet bourbon

Wild Turkey 101 has a strong personality, Evan Williams offers great satisfaction for the price, and Buffalo Trace is known for its relatively smooth taste.

Personally, I like Wild Turkey 101 the most, but I think Evan Williams is also a great choice for casual drinking with friends.
