A friend who moved from the East Coast to the Bay Area once told me this.
"San Jose is a comfortable neighborhood for Koreans, even though the cost of living is high." At first, I brushed it off, but after living in San Jose, I found that to be true.
In my opinion, the presence of the Korean community is crucial. There is a significant Korean community in San Jose and the nearby Silicon Valley area.
While the exact population statistics fluctuate, it is estimated that tens of thousands of Koreans reside in Santa Clara County as a whole. Thanks to this community, there are many stores, services, and people where you can communicate in Korean in everyday life.
Access to Korean food is also important. There are large Korean supermarkets like H Mart near San Jose, as well as several smaller Korean markets that carry Korean products.
You can find ramen, gochujang, kimchi, pork belly, and Korean snacks without much hassle. Occasionally, you may need to order specific products online if they are unavailable, but overall accessibility is much better compared to other areas with fewer Koreans.
The Korean church community is also significant. There are many large and small Korean churches operating in San Jose and the Silicon Valley area.
Korean churches serve as places of worship and community hubs. They share information about housing, jobs, and daily life with newcomers, exchange experiences regarding children's education, and provide emotional support.
The educational environment for children is also an important factor for Korean families. The school districts in Santa Clara County, where San Jose is located, are generally of high quality. In particular, the Cupertino Union School District is one of the top school districts in California, which is one reason many Korean families prefer to live in this area. The culture of Korean families that values academic achievement aligns well with the educational environment here.
Economic opportunities cannot be overlooked. The tech industry in Silicon Valley has provided many opportunities for Asian talent, including Koreans. Companies like Google, Apple, Samsung Semiconductor's U.S. branch, and Hyundai/Kia-related businesses, as well as many Korean startups, are located in this area. There are job opportunities where Korean can be utilized, especially in fields related to U.S.-Korea business, which can even provide advantages.
California's immigrant-friendly environment is also a plus. California implements various laws and policies that protect the rights of immigrants and offers more opportunities for immigrants in areas like healthcare support and obtaining driver's licenses compared to other states. The social atmosphere, which is accustomed to people from diverse cultural backgrounds living together, also helps Korean immigrants settle in without significant cultural friction.
Of course, the high cost of living and housing remains a significant burden. However, considering the Korean community, food, education, and economic opportunities as a whole, I believe that San Jose is not a bad place for Korean immigrants to live, provided they have the financial means.
