When I first settled in San Jose a long time ago, the first question I asked was, "Where do you shop?"
At that time, a friend asked, "Have you been to Santana Row?" and that was my first shopping experience in San Jose.
Since then, I've learned how much the shopping landscape in this area has changed, and I want to share what I've discovered through my own explorations. I hope this helps newcomers or those who are not familiar with San Jose.
If I had to name a landmark for shopping in San Jose, it would undoubtedly be Santana Row. Located near Campbell Avenue, this open-air shopping center is a premium shopping space with high-end boutiques, restaurants, cafes, and a movie theater all in one block.
From luxury brands like Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Tiffany to Lululemon, Apple Store, and various restaurants, it's a great place to enjoy shopping as well as leisure and dining.
On weekend evenings, there are often live music events, and the atmosphere reflects the Silicon Valley lifestyle. While many shops have higher price points, just browsing is a visual treat.
Right across the street from Santana Row is the Westfield Valley Fair shopping mall. These two locations are close enough to explore in one day. Valley Fair is one of the largest malls in California, featuring anchor stores like Nordstrom, Macy's, Apple Store, and Tesla showroom, along with hundreds of other brands.
There are many familiar brands for the Korean community, and a Korean restaurant is located near the food court. The mall has been beautifully renovated, making for a pleasant shopping experience.

If you're looking for more everyday shopping, Eastridge Mall is convenient. Located in East San Jose, this mall may not be as luxurious as Valley Fair, but it sufficiently meets general shopping needs. Major department stores like Macy's and JCPenney, along with various clothing, electronics, and sports brands, are gathered here. It's a shopping mall that many residents of East San Jose frequent.
Heading towards Milpitas, you'll find the Great Mall. This outlet-style shopping center offers the advantage of discounted prices. It features outlet stores for well-known brands like Nike, Gap, Banana Republic, and Coach, allowing you to shop at lower prices than retail. Especially during off-season sales, the discounts can be significant, making it a great option for bargain hunters. H Mart in Milpitas is nearby, making it convenient to combine grocery shopping with your visit.
You can't forget about the Farmer's Markets. Various farmers' markets are held in San Jose and surrounding areas on different days of the week. The Downtown San Jose Farmers' Market is a regular market near San Jose City Hall, where you can buy fresh vegetables, fruits, artisanal bread, cheese, and local specialties. Santa Clara and Cupertino also have periodic farmers' markets, making it easy for local residents to access them. If you enjoy local organic produce and handmade goods, the farmers' markets provide a much more satisfying experience than supermarkets.
Of course, there are also Target, Costco, and Walmart locations throughout the area. For everyday consumer goods and household items, these big-box stores are the most economical and convenient options. Costco requires a membership, but it offers competitive pricing for bulk purchases. There are several Target and Costco locations in San Jose, so you can choose one that's close to your home.
From my decades of living here, I've realized that San Jose offers plenty of options for luxury shopping, budget-friendly shopping, and local farmers' markets, catering to different styles and budgets. Enjoying the atmosphere at Santana Row, shopping for value at the Great Mall, and picking up fresh ingredients at the farmers' market are some of the small joys of life in this area.
