When I was younger, I wasn't really into camping (I was always out and about on Friday nights and weekends, haha), but now that I'm in my 40s, I've come to appreciate the joy of camping in nature.

There are several excellent camping spots within an hour's drive of San Jose. I recommend taking a break from the busy life of Silicon Valley to enjoy some time in nature. Once a guy gets a taste of it, he'll want to keep going back.

Let me introduce you to some camping sites near San Jose that I've personally visited or have been strongly recommended by others. It would be great to see more campmasters out there.

First, Henry W. Coe State Park is located about an hour east of San Jose and is the largest state park in Northern California.

Spanning over 89,000 acres, it features trails, camping sites, and ponds. It's the best choice for those who want a true camping experience in nature. The environment is mostly undeveloped, making the starlit sky beautiful.

However, it can get very hot in the summer and water may be scarce, so spring and fall are the best times to visit. I recommend going with a 4WD or SUV as the mountain roads can be rough.

Sanborn County Park is located in the Santa Cruz Mountains near Saratoga. It's about a 30-40 minute drive from San Jose, making it easily accessible, and the Santa Cruz County Youth Hostel is also located within the park, which is especially useful for budget travelers. There are camping sites available, and you can enjoy camping among the lush redwood trees.

It's a great place to experience the beautiful nature of the Santa Cruz Mountains up close.

Joseph D. Grant County Park is located about 20 miles east of San Jose towards Mt. Hamilton. It covers 9,500 acres and has various hiking trails and camping sites.

In spring, wildflowers bloom in the meadows, and deer are often seen, making it popular for family camping. Planning a visit to the Lick Observatory along with your trip makes for a special experience.

Uvas Canyon County Park is a small park located near Morgan Hill, about an hour south of San Jose. The park is known for its multiple waterfalls. Especially during the rainy season in winter and spring, the waterfalls are spectacular. There are camping sites available, and the Waterfall Loop Trail, which leads to a series of waterfalls, is quite popular.

Big Basin Redwoods State Park is one of the oldest state parks in California, located in the Santa Cruz Mountains. It suffered significant damage from the CZU Lightning Complex Fire in 2020, and some facilities are still being restored, but nature is recovering quickly. Camping under the towering coast redwoods is one of the most impressive natural experiences you can have near San Jose. Be sure to check the park's official website for current opening status before your visit.

Here are some tips for making camping reservations. Most California state parks and county parks can be reserved online through ReserveCalifornia.com or each county park's reservation system. Especially on weekends in spring and fall, sites fill up quickly, so it's best to book 2-3 months in advance. If you find it difficult to gather all the camping gear, you can purchase tents, sleeping bags, etc., at nearby REI or Sports Chalet, or some parks offer glamping accommodations for rent.

Living a busy life in the city and then setting up a tent under the stars and lighting a campfire on the weekend is truly a different experience. San Jose is conveniently located to enjoy that experience within an hour's drive.
