Last week, on my way to get my car serviced, I passed by a pharmacy with a large Flu Shot banner hanging at the entrance. Did you know that the benefits you receive can vary quite a bit depending on where you get the shot?
I think of getting the flu vaccine every year around this time as a regular check-up, just like a car inspection. And if I'm going to get the shot, I believe it's worth it to also grab some coupons.
Today, I will outline the benefits available at pharmacies for the 2026-2027 season step by step. The order will be cost, pharmacy coupons, California regulations, and practical tips.
First, let's talk about costs. If you have insurance, you can usually get the shot without any out-of-pocket expenses.
Medicare Part B covers the flu vaccine once per season. If the healthcare provider accepts assignment, your out-of-pocket cost is $0, and neither the Part B deductible nor coinsurance applies.
According to CMS data, the payment criteria for Part B vaccines this season apply to vaccinations given from August 1, 2026, to July 31, 2027. So, if you get vaccinated now, it will count for this season.
Medicare Advantage plans must also provide the same level of $0 benefits. However, the pharmacy network available may vary by plan, so it's a good idea to check the number on the back of your card.
California has one additional requirement. Thanks to the AB 144 law signed in September 2025, state-regulated health insurance must cover vaccines recommended by the CDPH, which is the state health department.
Under the same law, California pharmacists can administer CDPH-recommended vaccines to individuals aged 3 and older without a doctor's prescription. Even if federal guidelines fluctuate, the state has maintained accessibility, which I honestly see as a practical measure.
However, according to county notices, this insurance coverage requirement may not apply to some plans like Medicare Advantage. Knowing which plan you belong to can help avoid confusion.
Now, onto the main topic: coupons. Even though it's the same free shot, the benefits offered by pharmacies can vary significantly.
Walgreens offers myWalgreens members a $15 Walgreens Cash reward when they get a flu shot, which can be used on their next in-store purchase. The condition is a minimum purchase of $5.
Additionally, there is a benefit where you can receive 10% back in Walgreens Cash on that purchase amount for 30 days. This 10% benefit is capped at $100 per member and must be activated by scanning once at the beginning.
The $15 benefit can be redeemed up to three times during the promotional period, with a maximum of $45 per member. If family members get vaccinated together, it can be quite a good deal.
CVS offers a coupon that gives $5 off your next purchase of $20 or more after vaccination. This promotion is available until December 31, 2026.
Looking at the numbers, Walgreens clearly offers more. A $15 benefit compared to $5 is a threefold difference.
Don't forget about grocery store pharmacies. Albertsons-affiliated pharmacies like Vons, Albertsons, and Safeway offer a 10% discount coupon for your next grocery shopping after vaccination.
This coupon applies to purchases up to $200, with a maximum discount of $20, and the expiration date is December 31, 2026. Safeway even issued a separate notice confirming that there is no minimum purchase requirement.
However, prescription copays, alcohol, tobacco, gas, dairy products like milk, and taxes are excluded from the discount. Remember this list before you fill your cart.
Additionally, Sam's Club offers members a $10 discount on their next shopping trip, and Costco allows vaccinations even for non-members at their pharmacy. Many people are unaware of this if they don't have a membership.
So, how should you proceed in practice? Here's the order I recommend.
First, make sure to bring your insurance card and Medicare card. If you don't have the card, you may be charged the cash price.
Second, sign up for the pharmacy's membership app beforehand. You need to be a member to receive Walgreens benefits, and if you sign up after getting vaccinated, you might miss out.
Third, time your vaccination for a day when you plan to shop. If you're already planning a big grocery trip this week, the Vons 10% coupon might be the most beneficial.
Fourth, make a reservation. Walgreens allows you to book appointments for up to four people at once through their app or website, making it convenient for families.
If you are over 65, it's advisable to consult with your doctor or pharmacist about which type of vaccine, such as a high-dose or adjuvant vaccine, is appropriate for you. Each pharmacy may have different stock availability.
Coupon conditions may vary by state and age, so be sure to check the offer details in the pharmacy app at the end. Each pharmacy includes such limitation clauses.
If it were me, I would do it this way. If I have a big shopping list, I would go to Vons; if I frequently buy essentials, I would choose Walgreens.
There's no reason not to take advantage of a free shot and coupons. Make sure to grab your insurance card and head out this weekend.
