If you are visiting Madison or living here, you will likely use the freeways (highways) surrounding Madison at some point. In fact, in the United States, the term "Freeway" is often referred to by its Interstate number or Highway number. However, from our perspective, they are all considered 'highways', so in this article, I will briefly introduce the freeways in Madison, Wisconsin.
Major Freeways
I-39 / I-90 / I-94
- These are the main interstate highways passing near Madison. Typically, I-90 and I-94 are frequently used when traveling to Chicago or Minneapolis, while I-39 is also useful when traveling towards Northwoods.
- The three routes mentioned above intersect or overlap around Madison, so you can see signs indicating "I-39/90/94" together. It may be a bit confusing at first, but if you follow along, you will soon be able to go in the desired direction.
US 12/14/18/151 (commonly known as "Beltline")
- This is a representative loop road section that crosses the southern part of downtown Madison, commonly referred to as the "Beltline".
- If you look at the map, the Beltline connects the southern area of downtown, giving it the name that feels like "the belt of southern Madison".
- It is very convenient for moving around downtown or quickly passing through east and west.
US Highway 51, Wisconsin Highway 30, etc.
- In addition, there are medium and small-scale expressways that pass through or connect various parts of downtown Madison.
- Sometimes, the navigation may guide you to roads like "Highway 51" or "State Highway 30", but these roads are also quite convenient for moving to the suburbs or nearby cities, so don't be afraid to go straight!
Points to Note
Rush Hour
- While Madison is not as severe as a big city, during rush hours (around 7 AM to 9 AM and 4 PM to 6 PM), the Beltline can experience slight congestion.
- Especially on Friday evenings, there are many vehicles as students from the University of Wisconsin (UW–Madison) head home or go on weekend trips, so it may be more congested than expected.
Winter Road Conditions
- Wisconsin winters tend to have a lot of snowfall, making the freeways and highways easily icy.
- While snowplows are frequently deployed during icy conditions, it is safest to reduce speed and drive carefully on days with heavy snowfall.
Speed Limits
- Generally, the speed limit on Wisconsin's interstate highways is around 70 miles per hour (about 112 km/h), but the Beltline near downtown may have limits of 55 to 65 miles per hour. Be sure to check the signs.
Rest Areas & Truck Stops
- Just a little way out towards I-90/I-94, there are rest areas everywhere. These have restrooms, vending machines, and picnic tables, making them great for taking a break during long drives.
Nearby Attractions
Visit the University of Wisconsin Campus
- If you enter downtown via the Beltline, I recommend exploring the UW–Madison campus near downtown. The lakeside scenery is beautiful, and it's perfect for grabbing a coffee at the Memorial Union Terrace!
State Capitol & State Street
- There is a road that leads directly into downtown, passing around the Capitol, and enjoying the view of the dome-shaped state capitol building while driving is a unique charm of this city.
- State Street near the Capitol is lined with restaurants, cafes, and bars, making it a great place to stop by while driving.
Lakefront Drive
- Madison is also known as "Lake City" as it is surrounded by four lakes. While driving along the Beltline or US highways, you will see the lakes beautifully spread out, especially stunning at sunset.
Exploring Suburban Small Towns
- Within a 30-minute to 1-hour drive, there are charming small towns like Middleton, Verona, and Fitchburg. You can enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of small towns and find quaint breweries or farm experiences.
Madison, Wisconsin, is a city that is neither too large nor too small, making it quite convenient for driving around. Of course, during weekend evenings or snowy winters, there may be a lot of traffic and slippery roads, so safe driving is essential!
