If you have the chance to visit Madison, Wisconsin, be sure to stop by Henry Vilas Zoo.

It is close to downtown Madison, and the best part is that admission is free.

Henry Vilas Zoo was established in 1911, and its beginnings have quite a warm story.

The wealthy Vilas family of the Madison area donated the land in memory of their son 'Henry', creating a park and zoo that all citizens could enjoy for free.

Continuing that spirit, it is still open for anyone to visit without an admission fee.

This zoo is not very large, but you can see a variety of animals.

  • Arctic Passage: You can see the adorable polar bears and grizzly bears up close, despite their large size.
  • African Savannah Zone: It's fun to meet familiar African animals like lions and giraffes.
  • Tropical Rainforest Zone: You can see tropical birds, reptiles, and amphibians, making you feel like you are in another world.

For children, there are also rides like pony rides and a mini train, making it a popular spot for families.

Gift Shop: There are many cute animal-related products, so it's nice to buy small items to commemorate your visit.

Food Court: It offers a variety of options from simple snacks to hamburgers, making it easy to grab a meal.

Outdoor Picnic Area: If the weather is nice, it's recommended to bring your own lunch and enjoy a picnic atmosphere.

Generally, the zoo operates daily from 9:30 AM to around 5 PM. However, hours may vary depending on the season or special events, so check the official website for the latest information before your visit. Admission is free, but donations are accepted to help cover maintenance costs, so feel free to contribute if you wish.

Henry Vilas Zoo is also close to Lake Wingra and several parks, as well as the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus (UW–Madison). After visiting the zoo, I recommend taking a walk around the lake or stopping by cafes or restaurants near the university to experience the unique atmosphere of Madison.

While Madison may not be large, its calm and exotic vibe typical of a college town is truly charming. Among them, Henry Vilas Zoo is worth a visit for its free admission and experiences that everyone from children to adults can enjoy. Even if just for a short time, stop by to see the polar bears and giraffes, and take a stroll by the lake to feel, "Ah, this is Madison!"
