Many newcomers to San Jose often ask, "Isn't this just a city for working?"

The strong image of Silicon Valley can make it easy to think of it as a city focused solely on work, but once you live here, you'll find that there are actually many festivals and cultural events. I didn't realize this at first, but as I attended various seasonal events, I began to think, "San Jose is quite an interesting city!"

In spring, the first event to look forward to is the Cinequest Film Festival. Held around March in various downtown theaters, it features more independent films and works by emerging directors than commercial movies. Recently, it has also introduced VR content, showcasing the blend of technology and art that defines Silicon Valley. For film lovers, it's definitely worth a visit to see international films that are usually hard to find in theaters.

In May, the Silicon Valley Comic Con takes place. It's a fantastic event for those who love comics, games, movies, and animation. There are talk shows featuring famous actors and game developers, and you can see participants in cosplay filling the venue. It's fun for families with kids, and adults can easily lose track of time while exploring the festival.

In June, the Silicon Valley Pride event occurs. This is one of the best showcases of San Jose's atmosphere of respect for diverse cultures and people. The event features parades, performances, and various experience booths, with many citizens participating. Even if you don't join the festivities, just witnessing the downtown transform into a festive atmosphere is a unique experience.

As summer arrives, many people eagerly await the San Jose Jazz Summer Fest. Personally, I consider it the signature festival of San Jose. Stages are set up throughout downtown, and both local and international jazz musicians perform. Enjoying street food while listening to music and having a beer with friends creates a wonderful atmosphere. Even if you're not a jazz expert, it's still a great time to enjoy the festival itself.

Also in summer, the Obon festival held in Japantown is a must-see. San Jose's Japantown is one of the oldest Japanese communities in the U.S., and the Obon festival here allows you to experience traditional Japanese culture and food. For those who love Japanese cuisine, it's a delight to sample various dishes, and you can also enjoy traditional dances and performances, making it a great family outing.

As the year comes to a close, the atmosphere changes again. Christmas in the Park takes place at the Plaza de Cesar Chavez in downtown. The park is filled with dazzling lights, Christmas trees, and various decorations that children absolutely love. There are many areas to enjoy without an entrance fee, making it a perfect event to soak in the holiday spirit.

If you enjoy sports, I recommend catching a San Jose Sharks NHL game. The season runs from October to the following spring, and watching ice hockey live at the SAP Center offers a completely different thrill than on TV. The pace of the game is fast, and the excitement of the crowd quickly draws in first-time viewers.

There are also many smaller events to enjoy throughout the year. The San Pedro Square Market frequently hosts live performances and food events, while Japantown has seasonal night markets and cultural events. These are great places to casually stroll through, even without special plans on the weekends.

I believe these festivals are not just events for fun. Spending time with family, greeting neighbors, and experiencing new cultures greatly helps in settling into the community. Especially for those who have just moved to San Jose, attending even a couple of these events can help you quickly get a feel for the city's atmosphere.

The notion that Silicon Valley is just a city for work seems to be a thing of the past. San Jose is a city where technology, culture, and diverse people coexist. As you enjoy the festivals held throughout the year, you may soon find that this city feels less like a strange place and more like your own neighborhood.
