San Jose International Airport (SJC) is a regional hub located north of San Jose. It is about 5 kilometers from downtown San Jose, making it easily accessible, with VTA buses, limousine services, and Uber/Lyft allowing you to reach the city in 15 to 25 minutes.

While the airport is smaller compared to major airports, its practicality and lack of congestion are its strengths. With two terminals (A, B), the time to move from check-in to the gate is short, and the wait times at security checkpoints are much shorter than at San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

Looking at the airlines and routes operating from SJC, major U.S. carriers such as American Airlines, Southwest, United, Delta, and Alaska Airlines serve the airport. Domestic non-stop flights cover major cities like Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Dallas, Chicago, New York, Boston, and Miami. There are some international routes to Mexico and Canada, but long-haul direct flights to Asia and Europe are limited.

If you are looking to fly to Korea or Asia, it is more advantageous to use the nearby San Francisco International Airport (SFO) or Oakland International Airport (OAK). SFO has numerous direct flights to major Asian cities such as Incheon, Seoul, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Beijing, and Shanghai. It takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour by car from San Jose to SFO, and you can also take the Caltrain and use the free transfer bus to SFO. For long-distance international travel, utilizing SFO is more practical.

Caltrain is an essential part of San Jose's transportation infrastructure. It is a commuter train line that runs from San Jose Diridon Station through Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Redwood City, and San Mateo to San Francisco. The frequency of service is concentrated during morning and evening rush hours on weekdays, with longer intervals on weekends. It takes about 30 to 40 minutes to travel from San Jose to Palo Alto and about 1 hour and 20 minutes to 1 hour and 40 minutes to San Francisco.

Amtrak also connects to San Jose. San Jose Diridon Station is a shared station for Caltrain and Amtrak, with the Amtrak Coast Starlight route passing through here. This route runs along the West Coast from Los Angeles to Seattle, taking about 12 hours from San Jose to Los Angeles. While it is slower than flying, it is a great option for those who prefer scenic long-distance train travel.

BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) is currently available at the Berryessa and Milpitas stations in San Jose, connecting to Oakland, Fremont, Dublin, and San Francisco. Once the previously mentioned BART extension is completed, it will be possible to board BART directly from San Jose downtown Diridon Station, making travel throughout the Bay Area much more convenient.

In summary, while San Jose serves as a convenient hub for domestic travel, it is necessary to complement it with SFO or OAK for long-distance international travel to Asia and beyond. From a practical perspective, the small size of SJC often becomes an advantage. The security lines are short, parking is relatively convenient, and the time to retrieve luggage is brief. For frequent domestic travelers, SJC is quite a satisfactory airport.
