When talking about local events while living in Irving, Mandalay Canal often comes up.

This canal, located in the heart of Las Colinas, was inspired by the canals of Venice and originated from the urban design of Ben Carpenter.

The first time you visit, you might wonder if you are really in Texas.

A walking path runs along the canal, surrounded by restaurants, hotels, apartments, and commercial facilities. It's nice to stroll along the water during the day, but personally, I prefer the evening atmosphere when the lights come on. You can see couples on dates, people exercising, and families out for a walk with their kids.

What makes Mandalay Canal special is that it serves not just as a beautiful walking path but also as a community space where various events and people naturally gather.

A notable event is Canal Fest. This multicultural festival takes place around Mandalay Canal and Lake Carolyn, where you can enjoy music, dance, art, and food all in one place. It truly showcases the characteristics of Irving, where people from diverse cultural backgrounds live together.

Visitors from various areas in DFW come, and it's not overwhelming for families to enjoy. On regular days, the canal area is quiet, but on this day, it fills with music and people.

If you thought of Irving as just a business city next to DFW Airport, taking a walk along Mandalay Canal is worth it. Strolling along the water, dining, and witnessing events happening in the area helps you understand why Las Colinas represents Irving.

Another famous event is the DFW Dragon Boat & Kite Festival, which combines a colorful dragon boat race with elements of Asian cultural traditions.

Watching the dragon boat races on Lake Carolyn makes you realize how diverse the culture of this city is.

Winter events are also not to be missed. Frost Fest, held every January, is Irving's winter festival featuring a snow sledding hill, snow play area, skating rink, and ice sculpture demonstrations. It's interesting that while you can't see snow in Texas, you can experience almost everything related to snow at Frost Fest.

In the summer, the Laughs by the Lake outdoor comedy show takes place in August against the backdrop of Lake Carolyn. On July 4th, a parade starts in the Downtown Heritage District, followed by a fireworks show at Lake Carolyn from 6 PM to 10 PM.

And you can't forget about the Mustangs of Las Colinas. This wild horse statue, created by Robert Glen in 1984, depicts horses galloping through water and is a symbol of Irving. The Mustangs of Las Colinas Museum & Visitors Center is located in the east tower of Williams Square, operating from 11 AM to 4 PM Wednesday to Friday, and 10 AM to 1 PM on Saturdays as of 2026.

With a packed event calendar, there's hardly a moment to feel bored in Irving. Depending on which event you attend, you continue to discover different facets of this city, making it an enjoyable place to live.
