Denver operates uniquely as the City and County of Denver, which is a consolidated city-county structure.

In simple terms, this means that the city of Denver serves as both a city and a county. Therefore, it is completely separate administratively from the surrounding Arapahoe County, Adams County, and Jefferson County.

The Denver City Council consists of 13 members. Eleven are elected from various districts, and the remaining two are At-Large representatives for the entire city of Denver.

The mayor is elected separately, and the current mayor, who took office in 2023, is Mike Johnston. While we don't usually pay much attention to the composition of the city council in our daily lives, the differences in administrative districts become relevant when issues like property taxes, housing development, roads, and public safety arise.

Once you enter Denver, you'll find numerous neighborhoods.

Five Points is known for its rich African American history and culture, while Highlands features a mix of old homes, restaurants, and cafes. RiNo has transformed from an industrial area into an arts district filled with galleries, murals, and restaurants. Even with the same Denver address, the atmosphere and living environment can vary significantly depending on the neighborhood.

For Koreans, this is where it gets more important. The Korean community often frequents Korean restaurants and Asian markets like H Mart, which are more commonly found in areas connected to Aurora rather than downtown Denver. However, Aurora is not a neighborhood of Denver; it is a separate city. Some parts fall under Arapahoe County, while others are in Adams County.

So, when moving from Korea to Denver, if you think, "I need to find a house in Denver," you'll naturally start looking at surrounding cities like Aurora, Centennial, Lakewood, Westminster, and Littleton. These cities are collectively referred to as Denver Metro. While the population of the city of Denver is about 700,000, the metropolitan area expands to nearly 3 million people.

Especially for Korean families with children, it's better to look at school districts first rather than just the city name. Most of the city of Denver is served by Denver Public Schools, but as you head southeast into the suburbs, you'll encounter separate school districts like Cherry Creek School District. One reason Korean parents consider areas like Aurora or Centennial when looking for homes is to take into account the school district, living environment, and Korean community.

Work location is also important. People commuting to downtown every day, those working from home, and those heading to the Denver Tech Center will have different areas to choose from for their homes. Even if it looks close on a map, the actual distance can feel completely different when you experience the commute on I-25 or I-225.

Ultimately, when looking for a home in Denver, you can't just rely on the phrase "I live in Denver" to make your decision. You need to consider which city it is, which county it belongs to, where the school district is, how long it takes to get to work, and how often you'll use Korean restaurants or markets.

Especially for families moving directly from Korea, it's advisable not to limit your search to just within the city limits of Denver. Instead, broaden your map to include Aurora, Centennial, Lakewood, and Littleton. In real life, the areas where you move daily are much more important than administrative boundaries.
