Although Torrance may seem like a quiet residential city, it hosts a variety of local events and festivals throughout the year.
When I first moved here, I had no idea these events existed, and it took me a while to find out, but knowing about them in advance can make life much more enjoyable.
I've organized the major events by season.
In spring, the Torrance Armed Forces Day Parade stands out. This event takes place on the third Saturday of May each year and honors local soldiers and veterans with a parade that goes through downtown Torrance. It is one of the most notable Armed Forces Day parades in the country and is quite large in scale.
Marching bands, honor guards, and various vehicles follow, with local residents cheering from the sidelines. It's quite impressive the first time you see it.
The Torrance Farmer's Market is a regular event. It takes place every Tuesday and Saturday, offering fresh produce and local foods. The Saturday market is particularly large and has a lot to see.
In summer, the Concerts in the Park series at Wilson Park is popular. Free music performances are held outdoors in the evening, where families spread out blankets and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere. This continues every weekend throughout the summer.
The Torrance Art Walk also takes place in the summer, showcasing local artists' works outdoors in the Old Torrance area. Gallery tours and food trucks operate alongside it.
In the fall, performances organized by the Torrance Cultural Arts Foundation are held at the James Armstrong Theatre.
Various genres of performances, including music, dance, and theater, take place throughout the year, allowing residents to enjoy high-quality shows in their neighborhood. Ticket prices are also more reasonable compared to downtown LA venues. The Del Amo Fashion Center hosts mall events during Halloween and Christmas seasons, attracting family visitors.
In winter, the Holiday Tree Lighting event in front of Torrance City Hall takes place. It's a modest yet warm event where the community can share the year-end atmosphere together. Events organized by the Korean community, such as those by the Korean Association and cultural events by various churches, are held sporadically.
For specific schedules, it's quick to check the Torrance Korean Association or the social media of each church. Overall, Torrance's events tend to be more about local residents participating comfortably rather than large festivals. They provide great opportunities to enjoy with children and mingle with neighbors without any pressure.
