Living in Torrance, I feel that this city is not the right place for everyone.
While there are many good aspects, there are definitely types of people who may not fit in well.
Instead of just listing positive things like an advertisement, I've honestly organized what types of people might fit or not fit here.
Here are the types of people who are well-suited for Torrance.
First, families that prioritize their children's education. The TUSD public school district is highly rated, and the educational community is well-established. Those who are used to a high-pressure educational environment in Korea often find a similar culture here and are satisfied.
Second, families looking for a quiet and safe living environment. This is suitable for those who want to live in a well-organized neighborhood without the chaos of downtown LA.
Third, early-stage immigrants who want to establish a base within the Korean community. There are markets, clinics, and churches that provide services in Korean, making adaptation relatively easier.
Fourth, those who have a car and prefer to drive. Living in Torrance can be inconvenient without a personal vehicle. If you are confident in driving and own a car, the dispersed amenities in this city can feel manageable.
Fifth, people who enjoy the beach and outdoor activities. Redondo Beach and Hermosa Beach are a 10-15 minute drive away, and there are bike trails and parks nearby, making it great for those who want an outdoor lifestyle.
On the other hand, there are types of people who may not fit well in Torrance.
First, those who rely solely on public transportation. While there are buses, there is no subway, and the walkable area is limited. If you want to live without a car, you should consider other cities.
Second, those who desire a vibrant city life and nightlife. Torrance is a quiet residential city. If you want to enjoy clubs, bars, galleries, and performance venues, downtown LA or Santa Monica would be more suitable.
Third, those who want to minimize living expenses as much as possible. Due to the high cost of living and state taxes in California, if you want to keep living costs low, it's realistic to consider other states like Texas or Georgia.
Fourth, those who want to quickly assimilate into mainstream American culture. While having a well-established Korean community is an advantage at first, it can also slow down exposure to English and American culture.
In summary, Torrance is the city that best suits "Korean families who want to settle down and live stably."
There is no perfect immigrant city, but the balanced education, safety, community, and climate in Torrance sufficiently explain why many Korean families choose to reside here long-term.
If you are considering a move, visiting the neighborhood in person over the weekend will provide you with more accurate information than anything else.
