From the perspective of someone who has lived in Torrance since 2000, this city has a rather peculiar location.
Administratively, it belongs to LA County, but the atmosphere is somewhat different from the typical 'LA vibe' we often think of.
It's not as orderly as a planned city like Irvine either.
Torrance is a neighborhood that lives at its own pace, somewhere in between.
With LAX nearby and the freeway making downtown LA easily accessible, the streets aren't a major burden outside of rush hour.
Yet, strangely, the suffocating atmosphere unique to LA is less present in Torrance.
There are fewer honks at intersections, and people seem to walk at a slightly slower pace.
The biggest reason for the different feel, despite being in Southern California, is the ocean.
With Redondo Beach and Torrance Beach right next door, the breeze on a nice day feels different.
Even in summer, it's a few degrees cooler than inland, and winter isn't too cold either.
The unique coastal weather, where morning fog lifts by noon, calms the spirit.
Perhaps that's why the people of Torrance generally seem more relaxed.
There's no competitive atmosphere like in LA, nor the tension of school districts and housing prices like in Irvine.
Even when waiting in line at the grocery store, there's no sense of urgency, and sitting in a café feels like time moves slowly.
The chill vibe typical of coastal cities permeates everyday life.
Another characteristic is diversity. Japanese, Korean, Caucasian, and Hispanic communities blend naturally.
Rather than a strong presence of a specific community, it feels like long-time residents maintain stability in the neighborhood.
With large shopping malls, quiet residential areas, and plenty of parks, there's a good balance in life.
Torrance is not a flashy city. It's not a tourist hotspot, nor does it have many landmarks to boast about on social media.
However, over time, you come to appreciate the charm of this neighborhood.
Between the chaos of LA and the planned nature of Irvine, it's a place where a comfortably relaxed life is possible.
Thanks to the ocean breeze, people become calmer, making it a rare balanced neighborhood in Southern California.
The deeper the connection grows over the years, the harder it becomes to leave for another area, and that's precisely the reason.
