Especially, the H-1B work visa is operated on a lottery basis every year, so no matter how good your qualifications and skills are, if you are not selected, it is all for nothing. Family-sponsored immigration can also take years, sometimes over ten years, to wait. Moreover, the processing speed of the USCIS is getting slower, leading many immigrants to express their frustrations.

Secondly, the anti-immigration stance during former President Trump's administration has significantly impacted the image of U.S. immigration. Many policies aimed at limiting even legal immigration were promoted under the slogan 'America First', and actions such as restricting entry from Muslim-majority countries and building a border wall in South America instilled a perception among many that "we are no longer welcome." Although the Biden administration has reversed some of these policies, the possibility of the Republican Party regaining power makes it difficult for immigrants to feel secure.

Thirdly, the high cost of living in the U.S. is also a major reason. Especially in major cities, rent, healthcare, and education costs are beyond imagination. Even if you find a good job, many report that after paying taxes and insurance, life becomes tight. Additionally, the healthcare system makes it difficult to receive treatment without insurance, and in emergencies, hospital bills can be overwhelming, posing a significant burden for foreigners. Compared to Canada or European countries, the welfare system is relatively weak.

Fourthly, there are issues with gun violence and social instability. The freedom to possess firearms in the U.S. has made gun-related news a daily occurrence. Families raising children cannot help but be sensitive to news about school shootings. Furthermore, the deepening racial conflicts and political polarization have led to a general perception that the overall stability of American society has decreased.

For these reasons, many people are choosing other countries instead of the U.S.

The most representative alternative immigration countries are Canada, Australia, and Germany.

Canada is popular due to its relatively transparent and predictable immigration system. Through a system called Express Entry, permanent residency is granted based on a points system, and the process from application to approval is relatively quick. It is also accessible for many as long as they speak English.

Australia has a well-organized skilled immigration system and a high quality of life, making it particularly suitable for family-based immigration.

Germany has recently been actively accepting skilled talents from non-EU countries. It is possible to find employment with just English, and the tuition fees for universities are either very low or almost nonexistent, making it an attractive option for young people.

In conclusion, it is clear that the U.S. remains an attractive country globally. However, it has also become a place that is "too complicated and exhausting to simply dream about."

With institutional barriers, social conflicts, high living costs, and political instability overlapping, many people are now seeking more realistic and safer alternatives.

For immigrants, what is ultimately important is 'sustainable living', and from that perspective, the U.S. is no longer the absolute number one choice.
