One thing I realize every time I travel to Korea from the United States is that money goes surprisingly fast.
As soon as you arrive at the airport, small expenses like currency exchange fees, transportation, accommodation, and even snacks add up, making your wallet feel much lighter after just one day.
However, with a little attention, you can save at least 500,000 won during a week-long stay.
Here are 15 money-saving tips I learned from my own experiences while traveling in Korea.
1. Exchange Currency Online Instead of at the Airport
Exchanging currency at the airport incurs huge fees. If you reserve your exchange online in advance and pick it up at the airport, it's much cheaper. You can also save a lot by finding a currency exchange service in the Namdaemun area of Seoul. Many bank apps offer over 80% favorable exchange rates as well.
2. Take Airport Buses or Subways Instead of Taxis from the Airport to Seoul
A taxi from Incheon Airport to downtown Seoul will cost at least 80,000 won. In contrast, the airport bus costs about 17,000 won, and the subway is around 5,000 won, making it a significant saving.
3. Use T-money Transportation Cards
Paying cash each time results in losing out on the base fare. By using a transportation card, you can benefit from base fare discounts and transfer discounts.
4. Choose Guesthouses or Airbnb Instead of Hotels
Hotels typically cost over 100,000 won per night, but guesthouses can be found for less than half that price. If you're just looking for a place to sleep, choosing budget accommodations is wise.
5. Use eSIM Instead of Pocket Wi-Fi for Data
Renting pocket Wi-Fi at the airport costs over 10,000 won per day. In contrast, an eSIM can be sufficient for 20,000 to 30,000 won for a week. It's convenient as it can be installed directly on your phone.
6. Use Cafe Discount Apps Instead of Convenience Store Coffee
Coffee prices in Korea can be surprisingly high. Franchise cafes typically charge over 5,000 won, but you can often get a 30% discount with app coupons or memberships.
7. Shop at Dongdaemun, Namdaemun, or Online Instead of Department Stores
Enjoy department store shopping with your eyes, but it's much cheaper to buy what you need at markets or online. The same clothes can sometimes be found for half the price.
8. Eat at Local Restaurants Instead of Tourist Hotspots
Famous restaurants in Myeongdong or Gangnam often have inflated prices for foreigners. If you venture just a little into the alleys, you can find kimchi stew for 7,000 won.
9. Take Advantage of Lunch Specials
Lunch specials popular with office workers offer great value. For 8,000 to 9,000 won, you can get a full spread of side dishes, making it an excellent choice for travelers.
10. Use Libraries or Public Lounges Instead of Cafes
You don't always have to go to a cafe when you want to relax. Many libraries and public facilities in Seoul offer free Wi-Fi and comfortable seating.
11. Check Transfer Routes with Public Transport Apps
Using apps like KakaoMap or Naver Map to find the shortest transfer routes can help you avoid unnecessary travel and save on transportation costs.
12. Reduce ATM Withdrawal Fees
Using an American card at an ATM incurs fees of over 5,000 won. It's better to set up a Korean bank account in advance or withdraw a large amount at once to minimize fees.
13. Book Attraction Tickets Online Instead of Paying on Site
Online reservations for places like Gyeongbokgung Palace, Lotte World, and Han River cruises are much cheaper. There are also passes available for foreigners, so be sure to check and purchase in advance.
14. Prioritize Carpooling/Public Transport Over Taxis
Only take a taxi when absolutely necessary late at night; during the day, always use the subway or bus. You can reach anywhere in Seoul using public transport.
15. Buy Souvenirs at Large Supermarkets Instead of Tourist Shops
Souvenirs sold at tourist sites are expensive and of questionable quality. Instead, you can find quality local specialties or Korean snacks at E-Mart or Lotte Mart for half the price.
By following just these 15 tips, you can save at least 500,000 won during a week. For example, taking the subway instead of a taxi from the airport saves 70,000 won, switching from a hotel to a guesthouse saves 400,000 won, using eSIM for data saves 40,000 won, and with transportation transfer discounts and online reservations, your travel expenses can quickly decrease. When preparing for a trip from the U.S., it's easy to think, "Korean prices are cheap, so I'll just spend freely."
However, after just a week, you might be surprised at how much money you actually spend. Using a card can lead to exchange rate shocks and hefty card fees.
On the other hand, if you pay a little attention to saving, you can use that money for gifts for your family or to enjoy additional travel destinations.
Korea is a truly attractive country for travelers, but there are also many places to spend money.
That's why it's even more important to spend wisely, haha.
