Near Miami, the place where freshwater meets the sea is called 'Biscayne Bay.'
This area may look like just the sea, but it is actually a vast ecosystem where rivers and the sea mix. The color of the water is quite mysterious. At sunrise, it appears a light green, at noon it turns a deep turquoise, and at sunset, it is painted orange.
Biscayne Bay is just a few minutes from downtown Miami. However, the noise of the city quickly fades away, and instead, the sounds of water and birds come closer. When you go out on a boat, an open view like the sea unfolds, but if you look below the water, it is not completely clear due to the influence of the river. Still, life is wriggling within it.
You can see sea turtles, dolphins, mullet, mussels, and sometimes even alligators. This place is considered a unique ecosystem in Florida because various species coexist as freshwater and saltwater mix. Fish species that cannot survive in pure saltwater thrive here, and nutrients from the river nourish the marine ecosystem.
This area is also famous among fishermen. There are plenty of fish like Florida snapper, trout, and redfish, so on weekends, you can easily spot people casting their lines from boats. As you quietly drift along the current, the wind brushes your face, and you feel your mind clear. Sometimes I go out kayaking with friends, and the only sound I hear is the splash of the paddle in the water. The surrounding mangrove forests grow thickly, providing shade that keeps it cool even in the height of summer.
The mangrove trees seem like the true owners of this place. Their roots stretch deep into the water, making them resilient against waves, and small fish hide among those roots. Thanks to this, the mangrove forest is also a paradise for birds. Pelicans soar in the sky, herons walk slowly along the water's edge, and occasionally, a large-billed bird plunges its head into the water to catch fish. Watching that moment makes you feel like you have entered a completely different time from the human world.
Biscayne Bay also has several islands like the sea. Among them, Crandon Park and Key Biscayne are the favorite getaway spots for locals.
When people think of Miami, they usually picture sparkling beaches and nightlife, but the true charm of Miami seems to be hidden in nature like this.
