When talking about colleges in the U.S., there are always those who say, "You must go to a four-year university!"
Honestly, that seems like an old story now. Especially in California, the pathway from community college to UC or CSU is so well established that local parents often see this route as a very realistic choice.
The same goes for San Diego. Here, there is a large educational system called the San Diego Community College District (SDCCD), which is one of the largest public higher education institutions in San Diego.
It operates three campuses: San Diego City College, San Diego Mesa College, and San Diego Miramar College.
First, City College is located downtown, making it really convenient for public transportation.
You can easily get there by trolley or bus, and there are many businesses and public institutions nearby, so students majoring in business, arts, or liberal arts often attend. The campus atmosphere is urban and vibrant.
Mesa College is the largest among the three schools. With about 23,000 students, it's comparable to a decent-sized university.
Most importantly, the transfer program is very well developed, so many students aiming for UC or CSU choose this option. There are quite a few Korean students as well, so I often hear that it's less burdensome to adapt when they first come to the U.S. The campus is spacious and the facilities are so good that you might wonder, "Is this really a community college?"
Miramar College has a slightly different atmosphere. It is known for its aviation programs, and there is a Marine Corps Air Station Miramar nearby, providing good related programs and practical environments. If you're considering a career in aviation maintenance or related fields, this is definitely a school to check out.

However, the real charm of community college is the tuition.
If you are a California resident, the tuition is about $46 per credit. Since most courses are 3 credits, that means the tuition for one course is about $138.
For a full-time student taking 12 credits in a semester, the tuition is about $550, and even if you attend for two semesters in a year, the tuition is around $1,100.
Moreover, many students qualify for the California College Promise Grant, which allows them to have their tuition waived. Low-income students or those meeting certain criteria can attend school essentially tuition-free.Additionally, many students are particularly interested in transferring. After maintaining good grades for two years at community college, many students transfer to UC schools like UC San Diego, UCLA, UC Irvine, UC Berkeley, or CSU schools like San Diego State University.
California has a well-established transfer system, making it much more economical to earn a bachelor's degree this way than by starting at an expensive four-year university.
There are also a wide variety of vocational programs available. Options include nursing, dental hygiene, computer programming, cybersecurity, graphic design, automotive repair, welding, accounting, marketing, culinary arts, and hotel management, among others. Therefore, there are also many adult students who attend not just to transfer but to aim for employment. Moreover, the ages of students are very diverse. You can find 18-year-olds who just graduated high school, as well as 30- and 40-somethings returning to study after working, and even 60-year-olds coming to learn new skills after retirement. In the U.S., it seems that community college truly embodies the saying, "There's no age limit to learning."
If you are considering your child's college education in San Diego, don't worry about the high tuition of expensive universities from the start. The pathway of transferring from community college to prestigious universities is a proven method that many students are already choosing. In fact, many local parents often ask, "Why pay thousands of dollars more from the beginning?"
Save costs while maximizing transfer opportunities. This is why the community college system in San Diego continues to be a practical and smart way to pursue higher education.
