I still vividly remember my first arrival in Hartford.

As I drove north along the Connecticut River on I-91, the moment I caught sight of the small skyline, I honestly thought it looked a bit small compared to New York, where I had lived.

However, after a few years, I realized that this city holds a much deeper story than I initially thought. Hartford is one of the oldest cities in the United States and the land where the roots of democracy in this country were planted.

Founded in 1635 by English settlers who came from Massachusetts Newtown (now Cambridge), Hartford adopted the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut in 1639, which historians consider a precursor to the U.S. Constitution. The fact that the seeds of American democracy were sown in this small city feels quite significant. As the capital of Connecticut, this city had a population of 121,054 according to the 2020 census, and it is projected to grow to 124,006 by 2025.

The history of the insurance industry cannot be overlooked. On February 8, 1794, the first fire insurance policy in the United States was issued in Hartford. Since then, major insurance companies like Travelers, Hartford Financial Services Group, and Aetna have established their bases in this city and grown. This is why Hartford is nicknamed the Insurance Capital of the World. The presence of headquarters of insurance companies throughout the downtown area is a testament to this history.

In terms of tourism, the Mark Twain House is undoubtedly the top attraction. This is where the author Mark Twain lived from 1874 to 1891 and wrote masterpieces like The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and it has been designated a National Historic Landmark. The Victorian-style mansion is beautiful, and visitors can explore the author's life through guided tours. Next door is the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center, making it a great place to visit together.

The Wadsworth Athenaeum, which opened in 1842, is one of the oldest public art museums in the United States. It boasts an extensive collection of over 50,000 items, featuring a diverse range from French Impressionism to Native American art and contemporary art.

With affordable admission, it is a cultural space that Hartford residents frequently visit. The Connecticut State Capitol, an impressive Gothic Revival building with a golden dome, is located right next to Bushnell Park. Bushnell Park is a beautiful park in the heart of the city, where a carousel made in 1914 is still in operation.

The Connecticut Science Center, situated along the Connecticut River, is a modern science museum that is particularly popular with families. The Old State House, designed by architect Charles Bulfinch in 1796, is a historic building that now operates as a museum. These two locations are within a 15-minute walk of each other, making them great for a half-day itinerary.

The food culture is also noteworthy. Hartford is a city where various ethnicities coexist, allowing you to enjoy cuisines from around the world, including Puerto Rican, Dominican, Ethiopian, Vietnamese, and Korean food. The Front Street District in downtown is packed with restaurants and bars, making it an ideal spot for dinner plans.

At Riverfront Plaza along the Connecticut River, outdoor music performances and events are held seasonally. If you enjoy sports, check out Dunkin Donuts Park, home to the Double-A minor league baseball team Hartford Yard Goats. With affordable tickets, it's a perfect place for family fun. Hartford is a city that grows on you the more you get to know it.
