Today, Moderna's stock is going crazy. I just captured the screen, and it has risen by a whopping 116%.
At one point during trading, buy orders surged, pushing it close to a 150% increase.
The reason is not the COVID vaccine. This time, it's a cancer treatment.
News has been announced that the personalized mRNA treatment 'Intismeran autogene,' developed by Moderna and Merck, has shown positive results in a Phase 3 clinical trial targeting melanoma patients.
A total of 1,137 high-risk melanoma patients who had their cancer surgically removed participated in this trial.
The patients were divided into two main groups. One group used Merck's existing immunotherapy drug, Keytruda, while the other group used both Keytruda and Intismeran.
The results showed that the group using Intismeran had better outcomes.
In simple terms, the time until cancer recurred after surgery was extended, and the spread of cancer to other organs was delayed.
They achieved the key objectives set at the beginning of the clinical trial.
Additionally, no new serious safety issues were reported.
However, this treatment is special for a reason.
Typically, drugs are used by patients with the same disease. But Intismeran is a bit different.
It analyzes the cancer tissue removed from the patient to identify the characteristics of their cancer cells.
Then, using that information, a personalized mRNA treatment is created specifically for that patient.
In simple terms, it's like having a 'personalized cancer treatment designed to attack my cancer.'
It's similar to training our immune cells by showing them a picture saying, "This is what the cancer cell looks like, so find and attack it."
The results from the earlier Phase 2b trial were also quite good.
In the five-year follow-up results announced in June of this year, patients who used Intismeran along with Keytruda had a 49% lower risk of cancer recurrence or death compared to those who only used Keytruda.
The risk of cancer spreading to other organs or death was also 59% lower.
So, it's understandable why investors are excited about this Phase 3 success.
However, it's too early to say, "We have conquered cancer."
The detailed numbers from this Phase 3 trial have not yet been released. The 49% and 59% figures from Phase 2 do not necessarily mean the same results will be seen in Phase 3.
Detailed results are expected to be presented at upcoming medical conferences.
FDA approval is still pending. Nevertheless, it is clear that this result is significant.
Analyzing the patient's cancer tissue and creating a personalized mRNA treatment that achieved key objectives in a large-scale Phase 3 trial involving over 1,000 patients is a major milestone.
This is a huge event for Moderna as well. If these results lead to final approval, it could open a new path for the company as a provider of cancer treatments using mRNA technology.
Today, Moderna's stock soared due to these expectations.
The treatment is not finished yet. There is still the significant hurdle of FDA approval.
However, the mRNA technology, which became famous for the COVID vaccine, has now reached the stage of analyzing different cancers in individuals to create 'personalized cancer treatments.'
Once FDA final approval is granted, the first commercialized personalized mRNA cancer vaccine in human history will be born.
