Annandale, Virginia, is a neighborhood that is quite familiar to Koreans living in the Washington DC area.
If you have lived in the U.S. for a long time, many people might immediately think of Annandale when they hear "Korean Town in Virginia."
In fact, it has a well-established infrastructure for daily life, including Korean restaurants, Korean markets, hospitals, banks, churches, and hair salons, making it a comfortable area to live with parents who may not be fluent in English.
Looking at its location, it is quite decent. Annandale is in Fairfax County and is about a 20-30 minute drive to downtown Washington DC.
Of course, this changes during rush hour. When traffic starts to build up around I-495 and I-395, it can take over 40 minutes. Adapting to this traffic congestion is one of the first things you need to do when living in the Washington DC area.
The biggest advantage of Annandale is its convenience for daily living. You don't have to go far when you crave Korean food.
There are plenty of options, from seolleongtang, sundubu, and gamjatang to Korean bakeries and cafes. It's also easy to find Korean ingredients, so living here feels like being in a blend of Korean and American lifestyles.
The residential environment varies slightly by area. It is not a perfectly planned and glamorous neighborhood like a newly developed city.
There are a mix of older single-family homes, townhouses, condos, and apartments, with many houses built in the 1960s to 1980s. Therefore, when buying a house, it's good to pay attention to the roof, HVAC, plumbing, and windows.
On the other hand, being an older neighborhood has its advantages, such as large trees and a stable residential area. If you go a little further in, you'll find quiet neighborhoods that contrast with the commercial areas. Fairfax County itself has relatively well-developed parks and walking trails, making it suitable for family living.
Many families choose Northern Virginia for educational reasons. However, not all schools in Annandale have equally good ratings. Even with the same Annandale address, the assigned schools can vary, so if education is important for your children, it's better to check the school district before choosing a home.
A downside is definitely the housing prices and cost of living. If you only consider Virginia as a whole, you might find it more expensive than expected. Due to its proximity to Washington DC and being in Fairfax County, housing prices and rents are not at the level of small cities in the U.S. When you also consider car insurance, dining out, and property taxes, the cost of living can be quite burdensome.
Still, the appeal of Annandale is clear. It is close to Washington DC, has a rich Korean lifestyle infrastructure, and allows you to enjoy the atmosphere of suburban American neighborhoods. Especially for those who want to frequently eat Korean food and easily access Korean businesses while keeping Washington DC, Arlington, and Tysons within their living area, it is a very practical place.
It seems that Annandale is better suited for those looking for a "comfortable Korean neighborhood in Northern Virginia" rather than those wanting a flashy new city.
