When discussing education in Morgantown, WVU is often the only institution mentioned.

However, pursuing a four-year degree is not the only path, and if you want to quickly prepare for practical skills or the healthcare field, community colleges can often be a much more efficient route. If your goals are clear, it makes sense to choose the path that leads most directly to those goals. Today, I will summarize the community college options available in the Morgantown area.

The first is Pierpont Community and Technical College. While its main campus is in Fairmont, it operates over 15 educational sites across 13 counties in northern West Virginia, making it accessible to Morgantown residents. Established in 1974, it is a public community college and the second largest among the 10 schools in the West Virginia Community and Technical College System, with over 3,000 enrolled students.

It offers more than 40 associate degree programs, 14 certification courses, and 37 technical qualification programs. The practical fields are diverse, including business, emergency medical services, health information technology, veterinary technology, information systems and cybersecurity, and culinary arts. There is also an aviation maintenance technology program, providing options for those interested in the aviation field.

The second is West Virginia Junior College Morgantown campus, or WVJC. This two-year vocational college has a campus directly in downtown Morgantown, making it the most accessible option. As of 2024, it has 673 enrolled students, all of whom are full-time.

It offers programs in nursing (RN), radiology, respiratory therapy, medical assisting, medical coding, pharmacy assisting, dental assisting, and cybersecurity. In 2024, the most awarded degrees were for registered nurses (RN) at 74, followed by medical assistants at 49, and medical billing and coding specialists at 37. Recently, an online hybrid program for radiology has been introduced, with clinical practice conducted at local hospitals in Morgantown.

The third noteworthy option is WVU Potomac State College. Located in Keyser, this WVU-affiliated school is about a two-hour drive from Morgantown, but it is a path chosen by students who want to start affordably with the goal of transferring to WVU.

It has 1,398 enrolled students and a very low faculty-to-student ratio of 8:1, which is advantageous for personalized instruction. In-state tuition is $3,480, and out-of-state tuition is $9,456, making it significantly cheaper than the main WVU campus. Being part of the WVU system, the transfer process is relatively smooth, and credits are well recognized. Particularly for those who find it daunting to transition directly to the main WVU campus after high school, some students choose to build a foundation at Potomac State for 1-2 years before transferring to WVU.

Choosing a community college is not a lesser path. Depending on your goals and circumstances, it can be a much smarter and more efficient choice than a four-year degree. Fields like healthcare, technology, and cybersecurity allow for quick entry into the job market after obtaining certifications, and the demand in these areas is stable. In the case of Pierpont, programs are designed to meet the needs of the northern West Virginia community, leading to active job placement in the area after graduation.

Community colleges offer practical value beyond cost savings, including flexible schedules, support for career transitions for working individuals, and addressing local healthcare workforce shortages.
