When living near Madison, there are times when you wonder if you really need to think this hard about where to go camping every weekend.

Even within the city, there are plenty of lakes and parks, but there are moments when you just want to pitch a tent and gaze at the real night sky.

Having too many options can actually lead to decision paralysis. When you organize the options one by one, the answer becomes surprisingly simple.

The state parks managed by Wisconsin DNR have solid facilities. The accessibility, being just a 30-40 minute drive away, is also an important factor.

Whether you're a first-time camper or a veteran, the high satisfaction level is a major advantage of camping in this area. To sum it up, knowing just about Devil's Lake and Blue Mound is enough.

Devil's Lake State Park is about 35 miles northwest of Madison, which means you can get there in about 40 minutes by car.

The highlight of this park is the view of the 500-foot quartzite cliffs overlooking a 360-acre lake. You can tell from the photos that the scale is different.

There are a total of 423 campsites, accommodating 1 to 6 people per site. There are also 9 group sites, allowing for up to 460 people to use the park at the same time.

There are 30 miles of hiking trails, and swimming is available at two beaches. With kayak tours also offered, there are plenty of activity options.

However, the competition for reservations can be quite fierce. Reservations open 11 months in advance, and weekends and holidays fill up quickly.

If you miss the timing during peak season, your only option is to keep refreshing for same-day cancellations. I can't be the only one who has managed to secure a spot this way.

Blue Mound State Park is about 25 miles west of Madison, making it even more accessible.

At an elevation of 1,719 feet, it is the highest point in Wisconsin. From the summit, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view.

There are nearly 100 campsites, and the fact that it operates year-round is a plus. There are also accessible sites for people with disabilities, showing attention to accessibility.

Each site comes equipped with a picnic table, fire ring, restrooms, shower facilities, and running water. You can expect most of the necessary amenities to be available.

There is also a 15.5-mile off-road singletrack course, making it great for enjoying mountain biking along with camping. It connects to the Military Ridge State Trail, allowing you to bike all the way to Madison.

The fact that the reservation competition is less intense than at Devil's Lake is also practically significant. This means it's a good alternative if plans come up suddenly.

In addition to these two places, there are 13 more state parks under Wisconsin DNR within an hour's drive from Madison.

Using platforms like Hipcamp, you can find quite a few private camping options. Reservations can be made on the official Wisconsin DNR site, and even with fees, the overall cost is reasonable.

If tents feel like too much of a hassle, there are RV sites and cabin rentals available. This makes it a recommendable option for beginners due to the low entry barrier.

The sunset viewed from the cliffs of Devil's Lake and the dawn mist at the summit of Blue Mound are scenes you can never experience in the city.

If you want to truly feel Wisconsin's outdoor culture at least once, I believe camping is an essential experience. Investing a day on the weekend will help you realize that the scale of nature around Madison is larger than you might expect.
