Lansing is a city that has well-developed parks and green spaces relative to its size. The Lansing Parks and Recreation Department operates over 130 parks and green spaces throughout the city, covering hundreds of acres in total.
The Grand River and Red Cedar River run through the downtown area, creating riverfront green spaces that allow residents to experience nature close to home.
Notable parks in Lansing include Ranney Park and Grand River Park. Particularly, the River Trail, which runs along the Grand River, is a key green infrastructure that connects Lansing and East Lansing with over 20 miles of multi-use trails for biking and walking. It showcases different scenery with each season, featuring wildflowers in spring and beautiful fall foliage. Many residents walk their pets here, and bike commuters also make good use of this trail.
Bud Shank Park is a family-friendly park equipped with a baseball field, picnic pavilion, and playground. Located in the southwest part of Lansing, this park is also a hub for local league sports.
Hudson Mills Metropark, while a bit farther at a 40-minute drive from Lansing, is a large natural park with a golf course, fishing spots, and bike loops, making it a popular destination for day trips.
Potter Park Zoo & Surroundings, located near the border with East Lansing, is also worth mentioning.
The zoo itself features extensive green spaces and is situated next to the Red Cedar River, providing a beautiful natural environment. Families with young children enjoy the combination of zoo admission and riverside walks. The park area surrounding the zoo also has picnic tables and a carousel.
The city of Lansing is quite proactive in preserving urban green spaces. A city-level Urban Forest management program is in place, with periodic tree replacements and new plantings.
Additionally, several community garden programs allow residents to cultivate their own vegetable gardens. Overall, despite being a car-centric city, Lansing offers a decent environment for outdoor activities thanks to its trail and park network.
