Living in Lansing as a Korean: What I Like About It - Lansing - 1

Lansing, the capital of Michigan, is less known among Korean immigrants compared to Detroit or Ann Arbor, but living here reveals its many attractive aspects. Here are some reasons why Lansing is a great place for Koreans to live.

Reasonable cost of living and housing

Compared to Ann Arbor or suburban Detroit, which have the highest living costs in Michigan, Lansing's housing costs are noticeably lower. Rent for a three-bedroom single-family home can range from $1,200 to $1,800 per month, and home purchase prices are also generally lower than the Michigan average. This allows families to have larger homes and yards within the same budget, making it appealing for Korean families.

Accessibility to MSU (Michigan State University)

MSU in East Lansing is one of the top research universities in the U.S., with a significant number of Korean students, researchers, professors, and staff living in the area. This has naturally formed a Korean community, providing an environment where Korean can be spoken to some extent. There are also community activities through organizations like the Korean Student Association at MSU.

Availability of Korean ingredients

While there isn't a large H-Mart in the Lansing area, basic Korean ingredients can be found at Asian grocery stores in East Lansing. Additionally, there are Korean markets about 1 to 1.5 hours away in the direction of Detroit or Ann Arbor, making weekend grocery shopping possible. There are also Asian markets towards Grand Rapids.

Safe living environment (suburban areas)

Some areas in downtown Lansing have high crime rates, but suburban townships like Okemos, East Lansing, Haslett, and Meridian Township are relatively safe and have good school districts. These are also the areas where many Korean families reside.

Job opportunities in an automotive city

Michigan is the center of the automotive industry, with GM and related suppliers operating throughout the state. The Lansing area has GM assembly plants (Grand River Assembly, Lansing Delta Township Assembly), providing job opportunities in the automotive sector. Additionally, state government agencies and jobs related to MSU play a significant role in local employment.

Four seasons of natural beauty

Michigan experiences distinct four seasons, with summer often being pleasant due to low humidity from the Great Lakes. The fall foliage is particularly beautiful, and while winter brings a lot of snow, it offers a great environment for outdoor activities like skiing and snowshoeing. There are various state parks and nature reserves near Lansing for weekend outdoor activities.

Of course, Lansing is not the perfect city for every Korean. The Korean community is not large, and the cultural infrastructure (Korean churches, restaurants, etc.) is limited compared to New Jersey or LA. However, for those seeking a quiet and relaxed Midwestern lifestyle or working at MSU or state government, it is definitely a livable city.
