Living in Orlando, you will inevitably encounter this situation. When asked, "Where do you live?" the response might be "Orlando," but later you find out the actual address is in Kissimmee or Altamonte Springs.
This is also true among Koreans. There is a common practice of referring to the greater Orlando area simply as "Orlando," so you need to check separately to know the actual administrative unit of residence.
First, let's look at the big picture. The Orlando metropolitan area consists of four main counties: Orange County, Seminole County, Osceola County, and Lake County. Within these, there are independent municipalities such as the city of Orlando, Winter Park, Kissimmee, and Sanford, while areas outside the municipal boundaries remain unincorporated regions directly governed by each county.
The city of Orlando itself is divided into six City Commission Districts (1-6). Each district is set based on population proportions, and residents of that district elect a representative commissioner. If you live within the city limits, you receive city administrative services based on your district. However, looking at the entire Orlando metropolitan area, many residents live in unincorporated areas of Orange County outside the city limits and receive administrative services from Orange County.
Here are the main characteristics of different areas. Downtown Orlando is the urban center where finance, law, and entertainment are concentrated. It has a walkable environment centered around Lake Eola and a large population of young professionals. The International Drive (I-Drive) area is a tourist district with a concentration of hotels, restaurants, and services around theme parks. There are more workers in the tourism infrastructure and short-term renters than permanent residents.
The Dr. Phillips area is a representative middle-to-upper-class residential area in Orlando. It features a restaurant row along Sand Lake Road and upscale residential complexes, with a significant number of Korean residents. Dr. Phillips High School in this area is also well-known for its school district. Winter Park is an independent municipality outside the city limits of Orlando, known for its strong arts, culture, and upscale residential character.
Heading towards Seminole County, there are Oviedo, Winter Springs, Casselberry, and Altamonte Springs. These areas are a bit farther from downtown Orlando but are relatively quiet and have a good residential environment, making them popular among families. A significant portion of the Korean community is also distributed in this direction towards Seminole County.
Kissimmee and Poinciana in Osceola County are located to the south of Orlando. They are home to many workers in the tourism industry, Hispanic communities, and immigrant households, with housing prices and rents being relatively lower than in other parts of Orlando. However, there tends to be a lack of transportation infrastructure, and the quality of school districts is often rated lower than in Orange County or Seminole County. Lake Nona, located in the southeast of Orlando, is a rapidly growing area with a Medical City and UCF College of Medicine, preferred by households in medical-related professions.
For those coming to Orlando for the first time, the most important factors to consider when choosing a location are the county (differences in school districts) and commuting distance. If your job is near downtown or I-Drive, unincorporated areas of Orange County offer good accessibility. If school districts for children are a priority, it makes sense to actively consider areas in Seminole County. If your rental budget is tight, look towards Kissimmee or Osceola County, but be sure to carefully evaluate commuting distances and transportation options.
