Albuquerque is a city located in the central Rio Grande valley of New Mexico.

Situated at an elevation of about 1,600 meters (approximately 5,300 feet), its geographical features, surrounded by desert and mountains, make it helpful to know how cities are distributed within a 50-mile radius when planning a move or a trip. Here's a breakdown of the major cities and towns within a 50-mile (about 80 km) radius of Albuquerque, organized by direction.

First, to the north, Bernalillo is located about 17 miles north of Albuquerque. This small city, with a population of around 10,000, is close to the Santa Ana Star Casino and adjacent to the historic Paseo del Bosque Nature Preserve. Further north from Bernalillo is Santa Fe. Although it is slightly over the 50-mile boundary at about 60 miles north of Albuquerque, it is the closest major city and the capital of New Mexico.

As a center for New Mexico's history and arts, it is home to many world-renowned galleries and museums. To the northeast, Las Vegas (NM) is about 65 miles away. While it shares a name with Las Vegas, Nevada, it is a completely different city with a population of about 15,000. The historic old town and Victorian-style buildings are well-preserved.

Looking east and southeast, Mountainair is located about 60 miles southeast of Albuquerque. It serves as a gateway city for visiting the Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument. To the south, Belen is about 35 miles away. With a population of around 7,000, it is also one of the terminus points of the New Mexico Central Rail Runner Express train line.

Socorro is about 75 miles south of Albuquerque, slightly exceeding the 50-mile mark, but it is a college town home to New Mexico Tech. To the west and northwest, Rio Rancho is directly northwest of Albuquerque. Essentially part of the Albuquerque metropolitan area, it has a population of about 100,000, making it the third-largest city in New Mexico. Intel has a large semiconductor plant here, making it a familiar city for tech professionals.

To the southwest, Los Lunas is about 20 miles away and is included in the Albuquerque metropolitan area. This rapidly growing small town has seen active residential development recently. The Cubero and Laguna Pueblo reservations are located about 45 miles to the west, where you can experience the culture of the Laguna Pueblo community.

The 50-mile radius around Albuquerque is a region where diverse natural and cultural environments coexist, including deserts, mountains, rivers, historical sites, and Native American culture. If you're planning a day trip, you can explore these areas by car, and I recommend taking each of the three routes: north toward Santa Fe, south toward Belen-Socorro, and west toward Laguna.
