Many may remember the incident on July 13, 2024, when Trump was shot while campaigning in Butler, Pennsylvania.

I was really shocked when I saw the news at that time. While Trump was giving a speech, suddenly there was a gunshot, and he covered his ears and ducked down.

Secret Service agents rushed in and surrounded Trump, and shortly after, he stood up with blood on his face, raising his fist.

The shooter was a young man named Thomas Matthew Crooks, who was 20 years old at the time.

He fired from the roof of a building near the rally, and Trump was grazed by a bullet on his right ear. The perpetrator was immediately shot dead by a Secret Service sniper.

However, at that time, the media focused so much on Trump that I later learned in detail that there were people in the audience who were shot.

Three audience members were shot, and one of them died on the spot.

He was a 50-year-old man named Corey Comperatore, who lived in Sarver, Pennsylvania, and had previously served as the fire chief of Buffalo Township.

What's even more tragic is that he wasn't alone at the rally; he was there with his family. When the shooting started, he tried to shield his family and was ultimately shot and killed.

The second victim was David Dutch, who was 57 at the time.

This person was shot in the abdomen. Initially, his condition was quite critical, but fortunately, he received treatment and survived.

He later filed a lawsuit against the federal government, claiming that if proper security measures had been taken, they would not have been exposed to such gunfire.

The third victim was James "Jim" Copenhaver.

He was 74 years old at the time and was shot twice while watching Trump's speech from the audience.

One bullet went through his arm, and the other hit his abdomen.

Particularly, the bullet that hit his abdomen caused severe damage to his intestines, requiring multiple surgeries.

He also suffered damage to his kidneys and nerves, and reportedly lost some sensation in his legs. Afterward, he had to walk with a cane, and some bullet fragments remained in his body.

This was not just a case of "being shot but surviving." Copenhaver was a veteran with military service.

After the shooting, he publicly shared his experience and, in June 2026, filed a lawsuit against the federal government with his wife, Marianne.

However, on September 23, 2026, he reportedly passed away at the age of 76 at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh.

The House investigation committee that looked into this incident interviewed 46 people and reviewed about 20,000 pages of documents over approximately five months.

The conclusion was that there were serious issues in the security process.

Multiple problems were identified, from the Secret Service's pre-planning to on-site response and command structure, resulting in 37 recommendations for improvement.

However, since the perpetrator was shot on the spot, the case itself was considered closed.

Yet, it seems that for the victims, the events of that day did not end there.

One person lost his life while trying to protect his family, and two others survived with serious gunshot wounds. One of them lived with the aftereffects for over two years before passing away recently.

While the news may fade away after a few months, for those who were shot that day and their families, it seems that the incident is still ongoing.
