When moving to New Mexico with your children, one of the main concerns is schools. Based on my own inquiries, research on GreatSchools ratings, and personal school tours, I will introduce three public high schools in Albuquerque that are highly rated.

Each school has a different atmosphere and strengths, so it's important to choose one that fits your child's personality.

The first is La Cueva High School. Located in the Foothills area in the northeast of Albuquerque, La Cueva consistently maintains high performance under Albuquerque Public Schools (APS).

It offers a wide range of Advanced Placement (AP) courses, and its college enrollment rate is high. The school has a strong STEM program and active extracurricular activities, including a robotics club and a science Olympiad team. The facilities are relatively well-equipped, and the campus is large and clean.

According to GreatSchools, it is one of the highly rated schools within APS. The area served by this school district is Northeast Heights, so residents of that area receive priority enrollment. If applying from outside the district, you will need to go through the open enrollment process.

The second is Rio Grande High School. Located in the South Valley area of Albuquerque, this school is known for its programs specialized in arts and cultural education. It offers comprehensive courses in art, music, and theater, and also runs a bilingual (Spanish-English) program.

The student body is diverse, and community involvement is high. If you are looking for an environment suitable for a child with artistic talent, this school is worth considering. The school orchestra and marching band are well-known in the community.

The third is Highland High School. Located in the central-eastern part of Albuquerque, it is famous for offering the International Baccalaureate (IB) program.

The IB program is a globally recognized international education curriculum that provides a significant advantage for college admissions. There are not many public high schools in Albuquerque that offer the IB program, which sets it apart. However, the IB program has a high academic intensity and requires self-directed learning skills. The foreign language education (especially Spanish and French) is also strong.

In addition to these three schools, Eldorado High School (Northeast Heights, STEM and arts balance), Sandia High School (Northeast Heights, traditional comprehensive high school), and West Mesa High School (western area) are also well-regarded in the community.

APS operates an open enrollment policy, so if you are not satisfied with your local school, you can apply to other schools, but be aware that waitlists can be long, so it's important to start looking early.

To be honest about public schools in Albuquerque, the overall education metrics in New Mexico are lower compared to other states. Therefore, there can be significant disparities between schools, making it necessary to check the school district in your area and thoroughly review school information. You can check individual school academic achievements, teacher-to-student ratios, and parent reviews on the APS official website, GreatSchools.org, and Niche.com.
