Since my twenties, I tend to get hot easily, and every summer, I always look for watermelon.

Being naturally hot-tempered, I often feel flushed or uncomfortable with just a little heat. However, when I eat watermelon, I surprisingly feel much more comfortable, and the heat sensation subsides, so I started to eat it regularly.

It is said that there is a scientific explanation for why watermelon has this effect. Watermelon is made up of more than 90% water, which greatly helps to quench thirst and lower body temperature.

Especially in summer, when we sweat a lot, electrolyte imbalance can easily occur, and watermelon is a fruit that naturally replenishes the lacking water and electrolytes. Additionally, it contains antioxidants like lycopene and citrulline, which reduce inflammation and help with blood circulation, so it goes beyond just the refreshing feeling and actually helps balance the body from deep within.

The fact that it is low in calories cannot be overlooked. In summer, we tend to crave something cool, but constantly eating ice cream or soft drinks can be burdensome for health. In that regard, watermelon is the best snack that you can enjoy without worry.

In traditional Eastern medicine, watermelon has long been regarded as a fruit with a cooling nature (cold food) that is effective in managing heat and thirst caused by the heat.

In fact, eating watermelon on a hot summer day makes you feel like you can urinate well and feel cool inside. I used to think of this traditional explanation as just an old story, but as I age, I become more sensitive to the relationship between my constitution and food, and I definitely feel it.

Of course, there are points to be cautious about. Just because watermelon is good for you, eating it excessively can actually be harmful.

Especially for those who naturally have a cold constitution, have cold hands and feet, or have weak digestion, eating too much watermelon can lead to bloating or stomach upset. It is also advisable to avoid eating a lot on an empty stomach. I, too, have a hot constitution, so watermelon suits me well, but eating a lot late at night or on an empty stomach can sometimes be burdensome.

Ultimately, I learn again that it is most important to eat in moderation and according to what suits my body.

In summary, watermelon is indeed a fruit that cools the body, both traditionally and scientifically. It is especially suitable for people like me who have a lot of heat, and it greatly helps maintain health in summer.

However, since there can be differences depending on one's constitution, it is advisable to pay attention to how your body reacts while consuming it. This summer, I will probably always have watermelon ready in the fridge, and it will greatly help me manage the heat and internal heat.

The simple coolness that a slice of watermelon provides is perhaps the wisdom of living through summer.
