The weather in Columbia follows the Mid-Atlantic climate of the eastern central Atlantic region. The four seasons are distinct, with clear advantages and disadvantages for each. While I have become accustomed to it after living here for decades, newcomers should be aware of the diverse weather variables they may encounter.
Summer (June to August) is hot and humid. Howard County is influenced by Chesapeake Bay, resulting in higher humidity, making the heat feel much more intense than the actual temperature. The average temperature in July is around 27 to 28 degrees Celsius, but when humidity and heat combine, the perceived temperature can exceed 38 degrees. Living without air conditioning can be difficult, and outdoor activities are best scheduled for early morning or evening. Thunderstorms are common, and tornado watches may occasionally be issued.
Winter (December to February) sees some snowfall, but less than in Washington D.C. The average temperature in January ranges from -1 to 5 degrees Celsius, with about 10 to 15 days of snow accumulation per year. However, when Nor'easter storms occur, snowfall can exceed 30 to 60 cm at once. Snow removal in Howard County is relatively quick, but during heavy snow, schools and government offices may close, so it's important to check in advance.
Spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) are the most pleasant seasons. In spring, cherry blossoms and magnolias bloom, while in fall, the foliage colors the greenery of Columbia beautifully. However, spring also brings a peak in pollen allergies, so those with allergies should prepare their medications in advance. In fall, the remnants of hurricane season (June to November) can lead to heavy rain. While direct hits are rare due to Maryland's inland location, there are often days of heavy rain due to the remnants of hurricanes.
Overall, the weather in Columbia reflects the typical patterns of suburban cities in the eastern United States. While it is not characterized by extreme climates, it is necessary to prepare for summer heat and occasional heavy snowfall. Registering for local weather apps or the Howard County emergency alert system (Alert Howard) can provide timely weather-related information.
