Living in San Antonio, news of shooting incidents comes up almost every week, but this case was surprising because there was a Korean victim.
On February 18 at 1 AM, a random shooting occurred in front of 'Mist Hookah + Ultra Lounge' located on the 4500 block of North Loop 1604 West, resulting in the deaths of Lee Kyung (50) and Derrick Daeshawn Brown (27).
According to police reports, there was a dispute inside the establishment just before the incident, and a man who was ejected returned with a woman in a vehicle and opened fire on people gathered outside. Witnesses reported hearing about 20 gunshots.
Videos taken shortly after the incident spread on social media, and it was reported that a security guard working at the scene quit due to shock.
The police arrested two suspects through their investigation, and they are facing serious charges of murder, which could lead to the death penalty or life imprisonment.
Currently, the two are in custody, and further investigations are ongoing regarding the motive and the extent of their involvement.
San Antonio is perceived as a relatively quiet and comfortable city compared to other major cities, and the actual sense of security is not bad.
This is partly because, unlike other major cities, there are hardly any concentrated entertainment districts, and the people tend to have a strong atmosphere of mutual respect, making such shooting incidents feel even more shocking.
In particular, it is reported that the victim was simply standing outside the establishment when he was shot. He lost his life just for being in that spot.
While living in the U.S., one often encounters news of gun incidents, but hearing about a victim from the same city, especially a Korean, makes it feel more real.
It also makes one reconsider that in Texas, late at night, in places where many people gather, especially where alcohol and emotions mix, small conflicts can lead to major accidents. This incident feels like a warning about the environment and times we all need to be cautious about, rather than just a problem of a specific establishment or individual.
The Korean community in San Antonio is not large. Therefore, when such news spreads, it feels more significant and spreads more quickly. It may be due to the sense of connection from living in the same city. Immigrant life often feels like being in the same fence, even among strangers, which makes it even more heartbreaking.
As someone living in the same area and as a fellow Korean, I hope such unfortunate events do not happen again. Above all, I hope that all of us continuing our lives in a foreign land can be a little more cautious and safely finish our day.
The reason for leaving such news on the blog is ultimately one. News may be forgotten after a day, but I hope the awareness of safety remains for a long time.
