So today, I will practically compare two representative community colleges in the Tacoma area.

These are Tacoma Community College (TCC) and Pierce College, and the right school depends on your goals.

You can think of this as a post that directly answers the question of what to do.

First, let's look at TCC. It opened on September 28, 1965, and is located in Tacoma's West End.

Currently, there are 6,199 students enrolled, with 61% attending full-time.

It has 44 career and technical programs that are state-certified, and it also has a solid foundation for first and second-year courses preparing for transfer to a four-year university.

It's also notable that it ranks in the top 20% of community colleges in Washington State.

Looking at the student demographics, the percentage of minority students is 65%, which is higher than the state average of 60%.

This creates a pretty attractive environment for those who want to study alongside people from diverse backgrounds.

In fact, this aspect is what I like the most. The campus atmosphere, where students from various backgrounds naturally mix and study together, serves as a great gateway for those with immigrant backgrounds to integrate into the American education system.

Now, let's look at Pierce College. It operates five campuses throughout Pierce County, with a total student population of 8,137.

The tuition for Washington residents is $3,777 per year, while out-of-state students pay $8,967.

You can prepare for transfer with an Associate Degree program, and it also has well-established vocational training programs in technical fields.

The main campuses are in Lakewood and Fort Steilacoom, which are conveniently located right next to Tacoma. There are also online courses, so there are quite a few students who manage to balance work and study.

Unlike TCC, the multiple campuses of Pierce allow you to choose one that is closer to home, which is a flexibility that Pierce offers.

This is a point that can easily be overlooked if you only look at a simple comparison chart, so I wanted to highlight it separately.

When choosing a school, what should you check first?

Whether your goal is transfer or vocational training, if the commuting distance is manageable, and if you need to take online classes—just organizing these three factors makes the decision much easier.

If your goal is transfer and you want to commute from downtown Tacoma, you might lean towards TCC, while if you want vocational training or a campus closer to home, Pierce is likely a better fit.

It's clear that both are much more reasonable options compared to four-year universities.

Personally, if I have a clear goal of transferring, I feel a bit more inclined towards TCC. The higher percentage of minority students compared to the state average is also a subtle plus point for me, as I value diversity.

The path of completing two years at TCC or Pierce and then transferring to UW or Washington State University is a realistic route that many students choose. Since getting into community college isn't difficult, if you're undecided, visiting both campuses to feel the atmosphere is also a good option.

Another significant advantage is that the system is open to everyone, whether you are a green card holder, a citizen, or a student visa holder. I always feel amazed when I hear stories from people who are trying to start studying again.
